Don't know the situation or the guys in the video so I am going to assume they know better and live under the same roof so can be within 2m of each other. But I can see why people can be upset with fishers not social-distancing if they see this. I can't imagine how much work for our law enforcement to keep checking everyone's IDs to check if they should be more than 2m apart. So, I can see it being much easier for the gov't just to shut everything down even though I really don't like it.

I felt the same after watching the video.

If you are sick ( feverish, coughing, difficulty breathing ), yes stay home and don't spread what you have.

Funny when the actual potentially dangerous afflictions were around (Influenza, H1N1, etc) the only lock downs were in hospitals/retirement homes.

Here in Canada, no preventative measures were enacted until late March. Airports and borders never screened people, other than questions. China's outbreak started in December 2019.

Let that sink in.

Amen, if our village idiot had closed everything off from the outside with no exceptions we wouldn't be in the latrine right now.

Well, that my only beef. Could have been headed off and controlled early, but being PC was more important than safe.

Amen, if our village idiot had closed everything off from the outside with no exceptions we wouldn't be in the latrine right now.

Well, that my only beef. Could have been headed off and controlled early, but being PC was more important than safe.

One of my earliest beefs was about the lack of action to close borders. First to China and then to Italy and other European countries as outbreaks occurred. The main problem is not JUST the Canadian gov't trying to be PC but also trying not to be the first to upset other counties including the US as we depend so much on other countries for so much of our living things (we went down that road of dependence rather than having our own for national security - e.g., making our own medical supplies and equipment and it's showing how it's biting us in the a## now). Food is another issue - less farm land for suburbia housing growth. We chose things that made more money but not more security.
AND we are kind of bound to follow the WHO recommendations and assume they are making decision for the health of people rather than economics. All WHO decisions and recommendations thus far up to when the US went it alone to shut travel to/from Europe were heavily influenced by China. The world could have avoided all those deaths, cases and the huge economic losses now being faces by almost everyone (and much more to come) with the shutdowns, lock downs, etc. IF the WHO recommended shutting travel to/from China. We still would have paid economically because certain industries clearly needed parts, etc. from Chinese factories that would have been shut down but it wouldn't have been this bad. The WHO failed all of the countries that listened. As much as I dislike Trump, his announcement to stop travel to/from Europe had balls - and remember the backlash he got from the European leaders? No way, ever, would any Canadian gov't, regardless of party, would have had the balls to announce that without a ton of consultation with those countries and we may have gotten the okay but only because we are small potatoes to those countries. And there was no way any Canadian gov't would have shut the US border (until the US wanted to shut it from Canadians). I still remember the CBC expert who claimed that shutting the borders would have only bought us at most 7-10 days (isn't that a huge amount of time (for an explosive situation) for us to get supplies that are running out in the next few days?)
This virus is a lesson on just how hugely influenced our leaders are and will be with regards to such globalization...they don't make decisions just on our health but economics drives more or less everything and countries with more economic clout will have more to say about what we do here (China and the US).

Same page here.
I was annoyed by the lack of serious attached to it back in Feb. Personally I cut out any travel into Toronto and avoided GO/TTC. I was also one of those people who decided to forgo heading to certain restaurants at that time. Yet we were hearing go out & visit restaurants - remember the photo-op. Very disappointed in how that was portrayed. Then the scientists came out with their words of wisdom: Low risk! No community transmission! Very limited impact on the young! Mild symptoms even if you get it! Then the airports were a disaster, self reporting only?? Now the PPE shortages. Hajdu’s passing the buck saving it was decades of prior govt underfunding resulting in the shortages - really? Even if it was funded, as with any supplies they’d need to be turned over regularly otherwise they become old, rotten, etc, but of course we did apparently have enough to send overseas.
And here we are...

It will be interesting to see all the reviews of what went wrong when all of this is over or reduced to low concern. I suspect all of those analysts are working on the economic losses now under various scenarios of when action (and what kinds of actions) were taken when.
I hope this is a real wake up call on how we have been doing things and just not questioning. Airlines have to be a big an industry responsible for this as any. Jamming people into their airplanes like sardines and hope something like this doesn't happen? Disease transmission within airplanes has been known for a long time (there were already investigative reports about how disgustingly dirty airplanes are - almost no cleaning between flights) and yet regulators continue to allow even denser filling of planes. I mean, I should have the right to not have to feel the sweaty naked thigh of the passenger next to me...one would think that would be a basic human right (unless of course she's gorgeous, which never ever happens and I use to fly alot!...but then she should have the right not to have to feel my sweaty naked thigh). I have cut my travel down by a good 75-80% (I was what they call a SuperElite, flying >100,000 miles a year for work) with Air Canada for more than 10 years and flying that much in disgusting planes just killed any desire for air travel and I can tell you the first/business class is not better with regards to hygiene (maybe even worse because rich businessmen as just as, if not, more disgusting with what they do and think they have the right to do). When my wife and I fly now, we always go through a long process of cleaning our seating area (we don't care when people stare at us and boy do they ever! I've had many flight attendants come up to us and whispering that what we were doing as very smart; we've learned from experience - I've had eye infections a few times on long hauled flights, was prevented from disembarking a few times for several hours, including once during the SARS epidemic and twice when someone died on the plane (not due to disease I hope but we never get told unless so contagious we have to be quarantined)).
Have been surprisingly impressed with Ford's response to this now (he wasn't in the beginning and I thought we were going to be Italy). But I hope he remembers now that we need to increase our educated people and invest in healthcare at all levels - these are the industries that will see us through such pandemics and similar problems in the future. I like what he said about never again depending on other countries. We should value more our human resources - important essentials should never be outsourced just because it's cheaper. Let's all learn from this and do better in the future. Isn't this also a great opportunity to become a much greener country since we have to shut down (and we will pay for it later of course) everything anyway....it's the opportunity to do all those things gov'ts have always claimed to expensive to change our behaviours overnight? It's about as good a chance we will have to do things since we are going to pay a great deal now no matter what.

Perhaps anouther lesson that we can learn from this is the manufacturing critical medical equipment like N95 masks in Canada. I.e. quit off shoring these types of things. It is obvious that relying on another country for these things is not a great plan!
