Last minute decision to go and a solo trip.

Thursday night I thought I will get up a bit early Friday morning and if the winds have dropped as predicted, I will go. Got up at 5:45, checked, no rain on the radar and winds are down.

Hadn't got anything ready so scrambled around and got ready, made breakfast and was at the Collingwood ramp around 8:15. Fourth trailer in the parking lot at that time of day? Couldn't believe it.

Was on the water and fishing by 8:45. Ran out to around 100fow and that was where I put down the Shoehorn spoon that worked so well for me last month and I was running it 100ft behind the ball. Around 9:15 the rod fires, but nothing there. Start reeling in, and had the lure about 1/2 back and suddenly a tremendous strike and run that just about took the rod out of my hand. Kinda rattled me and I did not get a good hook set. Was on for about 10 seconds and gone. Figure it was big salmon.

Within the next hour, had another hit but gone by the time I grabbed the rod.

I had run a far ways North using various Shoehorn spoons and but no action and no marks.

Picked up and ran back South for a mile or so and set up in 90fow. Decided to use one of my Freedom Cut Plug Herring baits. I had good luck with them last year. Within 5 minutes of putting it down, the rod fired and I had a 5.5lb laker.

30 minutes later rod fires again and I have a 3lb laker. Now I have my limit of lakers.

Decided to try deeper water, run a large size FCPH and fish much higher in the water column.
Went out to 160fow, no marks and no action.

Called it a day just before 1:30. Nice day to be on the water, light winds and pretty calm.

Following pic is the 5.5 laker and you can see the lure. You can run them with or without flashers and I ran today without, although I did use an Agitator for a while when I was running Shoehorns.

Sounds like you had a great day. If you had been around here you would have need the ARK. Started to rain about 930, by the time it stopped was about 4, dropping 3.5" of rain and supposed to get another inch tonight.

Hey Steve

It was a lovely sunny day with some light haze around and low winds.

You can keep the ran, we have had lots in the last week to 10 days.

Well Ralph, it is still raining here this morning and supposed to rain till tomorrow afternoon. I'm pretty sure we are well over 20" in last 3 weeks. Between rain and wind, not a lot of fishing for me

Very nice.. Those are real fat lakers...

Sounds like a great day with some excitement!

Glad you got out there, weather was beautiful yesterday for fishing.

On a side note, the "real" England vs Italy Euro Cup Match..

Sorry about the loss, you played well.

It came down the penalties, as close as you can get..

Cheers & Thanks for the report...,

The Lakers have been on the chase out there hard lately, 2 lure changes and 3 times popping rods up to head in have yielded Lakers for me and my son in the last couple weeks. Nothing like calling it quits and then getting slammed on your retrieve! Nice report Ralph.

Thanks for the report Ralph. I was out solo on Friday as well, but got skunked in the evening. I heard that I should have stayed out till after dark.
