I drove over the causeway yesterday. There was a skim on one side and you could have launched a boat on the boat ramp side totally open. Still a bit yet I figure.

It’s froze across within sight of the causeway. We stood on the ice on the Ennismore side tonight, but only 20’ from shore. Warm temps for the next few days.

There’s some open water in the middle. It’s probably 2-3”, but not very good with the week of warm weather. Nobody’s out there, it’s be pretty dangerous right now.

Was out yesterday and walked on from the Clonakilty Line launch. Ice thickness was pretty inconsistent. Some spots away from the main cluster of people was 4-5" but around the cluster was anywhere around 3".
Tried to get closer to horseshoe island and the smaller island to the north but the ice got to be around 2" with some obvious openings or slushy areas.
Someone drove a four wheeler out and I would say that is a big risk at this point.
Fishing was ok. Perch, pumpkin seed and I saw a decent sized bass float by my camera. No crappy to be seen but we didn't stay to dark.
Be safe out there. Overall I'd say it's not safe for people who are inexperienced or not wearing some type of floatation suit.

I live up the street from the causeway and saw two huts out on Chemong today! I am going to wait a few more days at least but looks like we are getting there

Out again this evening (Dec 29th) and it was a really eery night on the ice. The ice was aggressively building and the cracking and groaning was intense. Twice it cracked at our tent and we felt a slight drop. Wasn't too worried because we were sitting on 6 inches of solid ice. Definitely not a time to bring out someone new or someone who is already leery of being on ice.
Fished until about 630 with not much to show for it. Have the camera down the hole and no sign of anything but perch sunfish and a lot of pumpkin seeds.
Beauty night though. Be safe, don't go near the islands yet unless you are prepared to go for a dip.

Another update on ice condition by Horseshoe island:
Still about 6 inches of ice and about 4 inches is good and solid. The top layer of ice is about 2-3 inches of white ice slush.
Fishing was slow until around 4pm. Smattering of really small perch, had a decent sized bass at the hole. Never saw any other panfish on the underwater camera.
Lots of huts out there now. Last night was a zoo. Lots of people fishing and lots of four wheelers and sleds.
Majority of sleds and four-wheelers were driving slow around huts and away from people. A few arseholes on sleds went flying through the main cluster of huts around dark. Be careful of said arseholes and make sure your hut has some degree of reflectivity on it.
