yes that' a funny surprise....and yes a big hole expecting big fish? ..I remember my 1st time ice fishing when I was a kid out on my own. I knew the lake produced 20lb+ lakers so made a hole approximately 2'x4' (no hut) you could almost fit a snowmobile in it. A seasoned ice fisherman happened upon me and filled me in on all the dangers of larger holes(people could fall in, break a leg or snowmobiles could be damaged) he pointed out I only needed an 8" hole to land the fish and I took his advice

way to big of a hole, someone going to get hurt it not marked. I saw a guy few years back fight a fish of a long it he pulled the biggest bass I ever saw out of the hole. I walked over to him, he was using a 4" hole, so yeah no need to go that big.

that made my laugh........
all you need is an 8 inch hole for large fish, but I do get the sight fishing desire...just make sure it is clearly marked before you leave... I nearly broke my leg when I stepped into a 10 inch hole up in Nip a number of years ago.......super sore leg for a week and glad I did not have to walk off the ice

Love that reaction. I do remember seeing mink doing that as well on Simcoe back in the days when I rented huts and they chainsawed large rectangular holes. Great for sight-fishing and also being able to net large fish (they use to provide nets in every hut) but it's not unusual for kids to get wet....use to fall asleep on those bench seats when the action was painfully slow...luckily, never rolled over and fall in
