I was out today with a buddy, usually we average around 15-25 walleye in the evening bite, today we caught 2. We missed a few as the bite is very light, they would grab on and hold the minnow but when they felt any tension at all they would let go. Well, there is always next week.

330 till dark was non stop for us last weekend. not waltonian but callander bay. 16fow. slow during the day tho. probably got 60 Maybe 70 eyes 4 keepers on Sunday afternoon!.. only 2 of us. I think they should drop the slot to somethin like before. 2 between 15 and 16.5 . lots of walleye in there. don't see much improvement. and now I'm sure some are now harvesting the big girls with the 18 inch slot. just my opinion.

Been catching up at work last few days and missed the post. We have noticed a change in "peak" times over the last few years. My guess is more hut location with reference to what part of reef etc. than any type of change in fish. We hit the ice day one at approx 12:30 and by 1:45 Sundown had me 12-3 in fish. Mainly jigging... so I switch to a spoon (herring buckshot from glow jig head with chartreuse bucktail), and caught up to 12-11 by 2:15. Day one was mainly a liquid diet with all adrenaline for first trip! But all 3 days I don't think we caught much more than 7-8 fish after 4 pm... Both AM's we always got 1 or 2 fish first drop down the hole but again fishing was peaked in the 9:30-10:30 range...
My estimate on number of dinks caught would be maybe 8-10 under the 10/11 inch range. I couldn't even estimate the number in the 17 inch range but it was the majority.
It was a good mix of jigging and set lines all weekend. I had a double header on the same rod with 2 walters one top one bottom hook, many double headers in the hut and and a couple double headers same guy both rods at once. After the first 2 days with great catches in the huts I was hesitant to go outside but it was such a great weather day we had 5 guys out side with each of our rods 15-20 feet apart and there was a lot of running back n forth.
Sundown cleaned the keepers and I cooked them. All 5 keepers were 19-21 inches which in this slot is perfect BUT every fish was a female just full of eggs . I would have gladly released every one and kept 5 of the beauty 16/17 males we seemed to be catching. Electronics were key and we would have missed quite few had we not had them... Floro Carbon leaders, Chartreuse and Orange seemed to be the hot colours (in both spoons and hooks) Stinger hooks 100% helped.
I would support a change in regs... I just feel the current slot forces the harvest of healthy female breeders! Somehow there needs to be a balance but for sure the population is 100% healthier than 5 + years ago.

You guys definitely caught a lot of walleye and some bonus keepers as well. We were in the hut beside you and did not even come close to you guys. 31 total for group of 4 for the weekend and no keepers. Small gold/copper spoons and blue and silver spoon took the majority of the fish.

Thanks...I understand the argument over catch and release...I've been winter fishing Lake Nipissing for 22 years ...over 900 walleye,my largest up until last week was 3lbs...So catching those two fish with my son within a 1/2 hour was one of the fishing highlights of my life..the 28" 8#er is getting mounted and the 5 1/2#er male was delicious...if the slot was different it would have gone back.
