Hi guys...I caught this beauty pike recently and if you notice by the tail, a lamprey eel was hanging off her. Prior to releasing, I removed it and killed the lamprey. In all my years fishing Nipissing, I have not seen a lamprey nor any marks on larger fish. Has anyone else come across these things? Worries me!

it is actually the black 'line' closer to my handling cradling her belly...not sure if pictures can be enlarged in case you can't see it...the lamprey was about 8 inches long at least...

Your pic sure is small. I enlarged it about as much as is useful.

Nice fish Cranman......

A "silver" lamprey was found on a bass caught in June (guy was fishing from shore likely around the Lavase River). They ran an article in the North Bay Nugget about it, and the MNR said they were common in Ontario. You can find the article if you Google "north bay nugget lamprey"

Needless to say, in my 25 yrs of fishing Nip, I have never come across any, nor have I seen any marks on the fish I catch.....so I would say that it is rare you found this one. This is the 2nd time I have heard of this happening.....I hope this is not the trend!

Thanks for sharing.

Was fishing South Bay in August and a 6" lamprey was affixed to a small walleye we caught - did same and killed lamprey. Fished Nip for many years and this was a first seeing this. Hope it's not an increasing trend.

it was a pike...I typically target musky so I was hoping when it hit but it was a very nice northern...glad to hear most folks are not seeing any lampreys...would hope the cold water in winter keeps them away...

Beauty pike!!!

About 3 years ago I caught a brown bulhead in South Bay with a lamprey hanging off it. Interesting sight. Killed the lamprey and released the fish. Only one I've ever seen.
