I was simply saying it was unfair to point the finger at one group specifically. Everyone is quick to blame NFN for the state of the walleye fishery on the lake when it's a very complex issue and no specific group is to blame.
I know in my personal experience having grown up on that lake, I have encountered CO's twice that I can recall and last years visit from them is in that count. Not enough enforcement. Just sayin'
Do you wanna try that again? The NFN commercial harvest pulls out 2-4 times more walleye from Nipissing than recreational fishing.
" 1. In 2004/2005 the MNR recommended a commercial gill net harvest quota limit of 30,000 kg of Walleye in Lake Nipissing. Nipissing First Nation rejected this recommendation and established their own harvest target, which MNR deemed to be not biologically justifiable;
2. The commercial gill net harvest exceeded the Nipissing First Nation target by 24% (2007) and 12% (2009);
3. The commercial gill net harvest exceeded the MNR recommended quota limit by 67.3% in 2007, 54.6% (2008), 75.6% (2009), and 4.6% (2010); and,
4. In 2010 and 2011, commercial gill net harvesters did not harvest their targets. "
Please enlighten us, how would more enforcement help us here? And enforcement of what exactly? And while you are at it, maybe you should also help us out and tell us where to point the finger.

How do they get the anglers harvest numbers? It's impossible for them to know how much is taken from the lake annually from recreational anglers. So I don't buy the comparison.

You dont buy it because you dont know how they arrived at these numbers or you dont buy it because it doesnt support your position?

HEY GUYS, This is a very touchy subject that has been addressed several times in the Nip Forum. Many have their own opinions and even if you disagree PLEASE BE RESPECTFUL of the opinions of others. I have already edited foul language out of one post and we will take further action if this behavior continues. A healthy debate is fine but personal attacks cross the line. We are all fisherman/women and are concerned about the future of the fishery. Were all on the same team folks Thanks for your understanding and cooperation.

How did they come up with these numbers. The commercial ones I can see how those numbers are readily available. But the angling numbers..... Do they guess? There is no way for them to accurately display those numbers. Whoever is behind those comparisons does it in a way so sway your bias, because at the end of the day the only numbers they know are the commercial numbers.
Can you can prove otherwise that there is validity to the angling numbers?

The same way that MNR comes up with all the other harvest numbers for other species and other lakes.
They conduct studies and surveys and from that they extrapolate the harvest numbers and the population numbers. Granted, it's probably not 100% accurate, but i dont see it being more than 10% off. And that applies to 10% less harvested just as much as 10% more harvested.

i have been fishing this lake for over 30 years and for only 3-4 days per year. I have at least had the mnr creel officer record what I've caught 10 times over that period. They have pretty good idea of how much fish of each variety that the recreational fisherman pull out. Remember if you pull fish out one at a time you don't get a boat load very fast now do you.

It's not the same, as the commercial harvest is reported. So you have accurate numbers against a best guess.
if they attain the angling numbers the way you say they do, the variance would be way more than 10%. There is no chance of them being remotely accurate especially within 10% if they're doing surveys.

Not you yourself. But if you put thousands of people on the ice weekend after weekend and day to day, it adds up pretty quick.
There is more angling pressure in the winter than the summer as the lake is more accessible to the average joe

I better call the MNR right now and alert them to this, i'm sure they didnt take it into consideration.
