Tried a new lake in Muskoka today. I didn't get there until noon and she was extremely busy. Managed one small walleye but was p##### of at what I saw on the way back. A group of 9 to 12 people left this behind unmarked. I don't understand why they even needed a hole this big in tea colored water not suitable for sight fishing. I gathered whatever ice was around that they left from the hole and made a mound and poured my left over coffee on it so people could at least see it in the daytime. I may be back tomorrow and if so will bring something to mark it with.

Clearly someone without kids.. A child possibly could go right in that void and may not even come back up...I think they could face charges for that mess..

If you head back tomorrow. Check 50 to 100 feet around it to see if there was a second hole that size. I have seen some vids of under ice gill netting. (Native person invited me to watch... so I watched a few vids and wasn’t interested)
Not hard to set up two huts 100 feet from one and another to gill net through the ice with huts at both holes. The kids running around between the two huts so others don’t set up over the nets. Only reason I see why someone would cut such a hole as the picture is showing they own an auger.

Seems like they cut it out with a chain saw a## holes could of at least put a branch or two not using their heads an accident that can be prevented .Hopefully no one gets hurt.

Good idea, will do. I only saw the one hut. Their group was split up when I came and they were at least 500ft apart. I will look though. These guys were not native. I can't speak their language (which i won't mention) but I can understand it a bit.

Yup, a branch would have been nice. I saw 4 inch auger holes around that one.

I was putting my permanent shack out last year in a snowstorm... had snowed 8" that day. I'm walking around, augering a few holes to check thickness, before I haul hut out with ATV, and WHAM!..to my nuts in the lake with one leg. Soaked, boot filled with water, and Jammed my thumb and bent it back on the way down. Friggin painful. My daughter was laughing at me, but it wasn't funny at all. Couldn't use my thumb much for several weeks and months later I could still feel pain when I grabbed certain things. A hole something like what you've shown, was completely drifted and snowed over, levelled off with surrounding ice. Friggin idiots.
I still don't know why I see on here people wanting augers that can drill intersecting holes. How big of a fish do ya think you're going to catch? Anyway, rant over. Just sharing my experience being a victim of such holes.

I am sorry that happened to you. Stupid and senseless to say the least. I've known a few guys that broke their legs due to unmarked holes.

Sheesh that's big enough for me to get in! Hopefully you can mark it if you get back out tomorrow. Two years ago we were up in a northern lake and I stepped into an unmarked hole. Went in up to my knee -- my floater suit kept my leg/clothes dry. I struggled to get it out. A little frightening actually, as my partner trudging with pop up ahead of me didn't hear my cry for assistance. I'm 5' and petite. Yikes lol
