how do you catch herring

I've set one out under a tip up for the whole weekend on a couple of occasions but it never got bit. I've used them elsewhere and got pike though.

As far as how to catch them? Jig aggressively and at the last moment stop to let them line it up. Don't stop for more than a second or two though as they lose interest in stationary baits pretty quickly.

Thanks for the tips. If I catch any I will probably try under a trip uup to see what happens.
