I use 6-8 lb as well. Assuming you are referring to leader. I run 2 - 3 ft of leader attached to main line with either a barrel swivel or direct tie to line.

i generally run a heavy line on all my fishing rigs (20lbs or better) and then tie a barrel swivel and run 2-3ft of a light line. For Nip i use 10lbs but if i were after trout i might do 4 or 6lbs line. The extra barrel swivel helps when running lures that spin. My ice rigs are running a dacron type line or a heavy braid that is really strong.

I've never used a steel leader since braided line came along, never had a pike or walleye chew through braid. My opinion is floro leaders make no difference on Nipissing, but if they give you more confidence go for it.

This is just my personal opinion , but walleye being evening and morning feeders aren’t typically line shy, light line might get you more bites during the day, so its good to have a few different set ups, mono has next to no feel, flouro a bit more , braid you can feel them fart, Typically for both walleye and perch I will run a light test braid with 10 to 12 pound floral carbon

But when I’m fishing less than 15 feet for big walleyes that are going to need that little bit of stretch on the hook setb I will run straight 12 pound floral carbon
