Went out today in search of crappie again, and npetersen and nsfisher came along as well. After I did the count, pretty much same result as last week, dozen small perch, 5 bluegills and 4 crappie. Kept 4 crappie for a 1 man fry and 1 bluegill that swallowed the hook. Will have to do more recon to see if we can locate a higher fish density area, it seems the area we were targeting is sparse with crappie. O well, always another day and any day fishing is a good day. Sorry I couldn't get you guys on fish.

Pic, biggest crappie was 10.5"

Thanks Jerry for getting us on Scugog this year. Unfortunately, only the dink perch wanted to bite our lines. I'll have to try you method next time. I couldn't believe the bite was so light, my minnows were stripped before I even realized it even holding the rod in my hand. At least your crappie got bigger as the night went on. Hopefully nsfisher was able to hook into a crappie once we left.

It was quite cold out there yesterday and we would have stayed to the end if we had brought an extra propane tank. Good thing the wind was not in our faces on the walk back. It was blowing pretty good.

Hey Nicole, I fared no better than you only the smallest perch I have ever sunk a hook. I got a couple larger perch with minnows but nothing to talk about and no crappie. I have an ultralight Fenwick and St Croix with a Spring bobber and yes very hard to detect a bite. It was a nasty walk back and the drifts were a lot larger than when we left. Thanks for taking me out Jerry and it was great to see you and Glen again Nicole. I myself am looking forward to Spring.

Lol crappie can be lightest of bites!
When my kids were small and wanted to ice fish, I would set them up with a slip float.
Helped them all the time.
Sometimes when I'm fishing crappie I won't watch the rod, I'll watch the line. If it moves sideways, or gets a touch of slack it in it. SET THE HOOK!
One of my favourite sayings is, hook-sets are free! Use em up.
Glad you guys got out.
Cheers!

Used up a lot of hook sets and was also watching the line as well. Every time it moved, there was nothing, no weight at all. I was even using an UL Lightning rod and braid line. Didn't have any bobbers with us so unfortunately that wasn't a choice. Oh well, hopefully we will have more luck at the M&G

Hey Mark, I had slip floats and used one but still nothing but perch. I don't think there were any crappie under my hole.

I was sight fishing them for a bit yesterday, and was amazed the amount of times i saw them inhale the bait without seeing the line so much as twitch, let alone feel it in the rod, ye other times they would smack it like a freight train.

Good job on a meal of them Jerry, sorry the others had less luck. While we had good activity at out hole, guys immediately north of us weren't catching a thing.

Yes, I caught the largest crappie last just before we packed up, weather was getting bad, strong winds, ice pellets & blowing snow, so we got out of there.

use of a spring bobber is key, watch your spring nothing else, we set up a camera last year and you would not beleive how fast crappy and blue gill can suck in and spit out your bait. I use a M to ML rod with a sping bobber cause at the slightist movement of your spring you have to set that really small jig . Concentration and quick refex's catch crappy and gills through the ice.
