I've decided to go for brook trout on trout opener this year, I know small jigs tipped with worms work well but i'd like to try some topwater lures. I don't have any fly fishing gear so if there's any small lures that work well for spring brook trout i'd like to know. Thanks in advance for any help!

Try a black and orange #2 or #3 mepps spinner with black and orange fur on the treble hook. Or a small jerkbait about 1 to 1 1/2 inch in silver or chrome.

Rivermaster, if you purchased a fly fishing kit, then perhaps try some 'sucker egg' flies. Suckers spawn in the spring at Ice Out, Brook trout like to eat the eggs. If you know a lake with Suckers and Brook Trout....then your half way there.
Ray.
