Hit Scugog with my son for one last kick at the ice. Couldn't have asked for a better morning. It was absolutely beautiful out. Was out for dawn. Had planned to go out from goreskis boat launch and fish the mouth of the harbour. Nope! That wasn't going to happen. The ice was pretty much gone from the boat launch area and was pretty bad all around the back of the marina, so we went out from the beach instead. That shoreline is deteriorating pretty bad as well and i went through into some slush puddles a few times both out and back. Once away from shore ice is still good and thick but top layers are definately showing signs of breakdown and are leaving shards behind from augering. After the sun rose high enough we had the lovely sound of the ice thawing and water running to keep us company.
Moved around a lot and drilled about 20 holes covering from 3 to 10 feet of water. Just couldn't find the crappie to save my life. Son caught 4 small ones and i caught none. Still had a great day out though, as wew ere catching a ton of bluegills and about half of them were in the 7-9" range, which i will happily take equally as a 10-12" crappie (particularily since i planned to just cnr today). I also got a decent 10" jumbo, and got two nice oos bass. My son lost something quite big at the hole (my fault as it broke off at the knot!), and also got a nice oos bass which is the largest fish he has caught to date. All and all a gorgeous morning out on the lake and a nice way to say goodbye to the ice season. We will now be devoting time to fishing the lake o tribs until i pick up my new boat and we start trying out some open water fishing.
