Well, the city of Barrie has handed out the new resident parking passes. I wonder why they only handed out 1 per household and you have to write your license plate number on it (up to 2) I am sure I will have to call the city, but what if my wife is out fishing and has the pass and I want to go out with a buddy who doesn't live in barrie. I always thoughtt they would give 1per license holder per house.

I twitted the mayor last week.
Here is his reply. was that They will be mailing next month (may) and will be available for pick up at the rec center for tenants.

I agree with Hillbilly. As most residents have at least 2 vehicles, there should be a pass available for both. What happens when I am out fishing and my wife wants to drive her own vehicle down and attend an event that may be taking place at Centennial Park or the such.
We have already experienced this situation several times over the last couple of years where they have a similar system at the cottage in Sauble Beach. I will be out fishing, using the only pass to park my car and trailer and my wife will want to go downtown for whatever reason. She then has to pay for her parking separately. Doesn't seem fair when you already have purchased a seasonal pass that covers both vehicles.
Considering how much my property taxes have gone up over the last few years, you would think the City could issue 2 separate passes. Common sense is truly an oxymoron.

I agree, if the city is worried about fraud the pass could be issued to a license plate number so it can't be passed around to non residents. I have two cars so could use two passes.

Not sure how to word this, but, if it's plate specific to a automobile, what happens when I pick up my buddy from Barrie to go out. His car is not pulling my boat and I don't live in Barrie. Will I be able to use his pass for the day or will I have to pay? I don't like the plate number idea for that reason.

Two plates per tag, additional tags avaialble at rec centres with proper ID. This is the cities first crack at it, I am sure there will be ammendments coming in the future.
Seems like a good idea and works well in other areas like Wasaga and Innisfil. Will help offset the costs of expanding the available boat trailer parking areas they have planned
To answer your question though, If you are coming to town to take your buddy fishing you will need to pay for parking, or have him pull your boat

How does the city access the list of license plates? How does the city ensure that the list is for tenants of Barrie only? What happens when you sell your car? What happens when the tag needs to be updated? Do they repeat this process annually? Do they have the MTO send them and updated list annually?
and the list goes on and on and on.... easiest way to get this thing off the ground is to take the list of registered homes and send them one pass...
That takes care of 95% of waterfront users in Barrie with one mailing.
Now .....need another pass, head over to a rec centre, flash you ID and bingo, second pass in your hand.. 100% of all users taken care of.
Might not seem common sense to the average guy, but when dealing with multi jurisdictional agencies, it makes the MOST sense
How does the city access the list of license plates? Every Municipality's parking authority, police department, etc... has access to the MTO database. How does the city ensure that the list is for tenants of Barrie only? Your license plate has an address asociated with it. What happens when you sell your car? You keep your license plate and transfer only the vehicle registration. What happens when the tag needs to be updated? If you do get a new plate, there is a process to get new tags. Do they repeat this process annually? There is no need to. Do they have the MTO send them and updated list annually? No need
The above answers are from my past experience during special events around Gage Park in Hamilton.

Careful now.....You cannot access the MTO list of license plates and use it for anything not related to enforcable fines, so now how do I access the list of plates and mail them out?
My plate is out of town, but I live in Barrie, now I get no tag
How much do you think it costs to print 60000??? 70000? Unique nonsequential ID tags? $20000?? I bet a lot more. So its better for me to print it blank for $1000 and have the taxpayer fill it in.
Listen I am not saying what they did was perfect, but they got it off the ground within a month and with little to no cost to the taxpayers, which is what Councils mandate was.
Alittle tweak here, there and it will work, at least add some revenue to the coffers and start getting those thousands of users to share in the expense we have to maintain our jewel$

Thanks for the reply, seems your well versed on the subject which is great, so do you know if they have or are offering a seasons pass for non residents? I have no problem purchasing a pass if it's similar to our day use pass for Provincial Parks. Having my buddy trailer the boat is not an option he has no hitch. Otherwise how much will it be to park at the launch?

There isnt a season pass but there will be a monthly pass. I beleive its around $60, or you can choose to pay hourly at $3/hour to a max of $15, similar to Innisfil.
The season pass isnt a bad idea for boaters and fisherman....that might have to become a reality
