BULLETIN Ministry of Natural Resources NEWS May 12, 2014 Ministry of Natural Resources Implements Changes to the Lake Nipissing Recreational Fishery Following a 30-day public consultation period on the draft Lake Nipissing Fisheries Management Plan, the Ministry of Natural Resources is implementing two recreational angling regulation changes to support the recovery of the walleye population in Lake Nipissing. This step is being taken to ensure Lake Nipissing’s fisheries remain healthy and sustainable for future generations. The regulation changes include: Introducing a minimum size limit in which only fish 46 centimetres (18.1 inches) in length and over may be kept, effective May 17, 2014, with the opening of the walleye season. Opening bass season one week earlier on June 21, 2014. For more information about the changes, please visit Ontario.ca/fishing, call 705-475-5530 or email LakeNipManPlan@ontario.ca. I wonder how many fishermen will be fined this year, especially at the beginning that have Walleye between 15-18" lol... glad I am part of the message board

This has been big news in North Bay. It's been all over the news, so I think locals will have knowledge of it and I would hope that tourists would check the regs before fishing. It sucks watching someone get a fine.

The tricky part for out of towners is that they may simply be looking in the MNR book for this year (2014) and of course there will not be any mention of the changes.
I will make sure all my guests know and understand the new changes but I would hope that if a few fishermen were clearly and completely following what they thought was the law (as listed in MNR guide) that the CO's just give them a warning.
I personally have no issues with the changes, I think it will actually be easier for fishermen to follow. 18.1 inches and over you can keep. Simple. But to implement this less then a week before fishing opens will most certainly catch some people off guard.

what did mnr change for native fisherman?
The MNR has no Jurisdiction over any Native Harvest, they can not change anything. The Natives have first rights when it comes to harvest, which was upheld by the Supreme Court of Canada.

Did the supreme court of Canada uphold commercial fishing as well as personal reguirements for the native community?
