Drove up to rice this morning with the family. Wasn't the greatest day fishing, but then,we were driving around a lot enjoying the new boat instead of fishing for half the time, so what did i expect! Started off with some unsuccessful trolling as we headed from marina to an island (note to self, family doesn't like trolling). Had some good hits off the island and were having a good time, but got chased off by a bunch of wasps Before we had to evac my wife got a nice oos bass and i got a good sized pumpkin seed. Lost a few good ones. In my dreams they were walters...

After the wasps chased us from our island, we decided to cruise up the otanabee for a bit. Went up to highway 2 and back enjoying the scenery and seeing what the boat can do. Got her over 25mph by gps with four of us in it. Plenty for me. Was also pleased that the boat gets to plane without a lot of high nose porpoise antics and is quite stable out on the water. Most impressive was that before today my daughter thought the trolling motor on high was too fast. Today all i heard any time the motor was running was "faster, faster" and squeals of delight when we were blasting along. Caught several perch near the mouth of the river. One was a monster, have included pic below. Quite the fighter!

Afterwards were making our way back across the lake and the wind had really picked which made for some fun jumps and a bit of spray. Fished the shallows for some panfish. Managed to get one small crappie. Son and daughter both caught nice oos largies. Quite the thrill on ultra lights and the daughters fish was a good 3lber.

Everything was released to fight another day, but i am really regretting releasing that monster perch.... It would have looked good mounted!

Still need to get loading and unloading down pat, but think i just need practice. Other than that, was a fantastic day on the water. My wife who was very much on the fence about a boat and just said yes because she knew how much it meant to me is now in love and wonders how others can live without the experience. I think getting her up close and personal to loons, kingfishers, turtles and beautiful scenery had a big part in her new found appreciation... That and she loves stretching out and soaking up the sun on the rod lockers!

The trophy perch!

I think for this one monster fish, i will give it away and say yes, it was the mouth of the otanabee. Prepare for the crowds to descend!

But seriously, the perch was just too funny, but the other fish were a decent size. The pumpkinseed could give bluegills a run for their money size wise, which doesn't happen often, and i think all three bass were the biggest my family have ever caught. Son definitely wants to hit rice again once the season opens so he can try for them. I think one of the reasons is how much he loves to throw spinnerbaits. He wanted to today and was upset when i had to explain that he couldn't since it was too likely he would get bass with it.

I got a lund fury 1600 tiller with a 30 on it. Small enough i can tow with my little car, but big enough that my family of four can be on it and not feel like we are rubbing shoulders.

Thanks for the report. Sounds like you and your family will be enjoying many weekends on the lakes from now on. Once you get off of shore, nothing really compares to it and a whole new world opens up to fishing opportunities.

Heh good one fishsniffer... I failed on the cue you are so good at on sunday. I totally didnt pack enough food for everyone. Kids had enough to eat, wife and i were another story. I got deservedly lectured on needing to prepare more and wing it less when i have the family out for the day. So against how i go solo so takes some getting used too. Next time i have to bring a feast like you have out on the ice

What motor did you get for the fury ? 25 mph sounds just fine for me.

it's a 2010 Mercury ML 30hp. Hydraulic assist on the manual tilt and it doesn't take any strength to pull start, so I don't see much advantage to having the ELPT instead. Really happy with the performance of the motor. 4 of us in and it never really seemed to bog or wallow (now mind you, my wife and kids weigh the same as one average fisherman, but still good enough performance for me!). Once the waters warm up I will see how well she tows the kids, suspect with that speed and the size of the kids it should be A-Ok.

Perfect sounding motor for the fury, we just got a 30hp Yamaha, have only had it out a couple of times with my wife and I. Do you know what prop size is on your Merc?

It's stamped on the prop itself, mine says 11 5/8 x 11G so I'm assuming the pitch is 11''.

Finally remembered your post while i was home and it was light out!

Prop is a mercury quicksilver black diamond 9.5" with an 11" pitch.

Cheers
