Nice fish, but we need more details. What lake were you on? Also what bait were you using? Trolling, or casting? Most fish that size are caught trolling, but not all of them.

My buddy and I have caught 3 muskies this year. 1 trolling a Wally diver and 2 casting. Got mine with a Zara spook and his on a spinnerbait. Last week I had a musky jump out of the water right at the boat chasing a bluegill I was reeling in. Splashed water in my face and left.

I dont mind sharing a FEW details haha - we are all friends here, right? I will say this - this musky was caught casting - I dont have the patience to troll Rice Lake with all of the "floaties". Here is the thing - I am going "old school" this year. I caught this beast on a "jailbird" patterned 10" Suick which is an old Jerkbait that was popular back in the '70's and '80's. I modified the Suick to be nearly weightless. My "old school' thinking is the fish in Rice are conditioned and have seen everything over and over. Rather than combing over new technology for something they havent seen I dug out a bunch of my old rusty Musky baits and fixed them all up. I can say that even with the horrible conditions, lack of weed growth, 65F water temp etc etc. I am hammering the muskies this year. Pretty much one or so every time out - and the average size is BIG. I learned a lot about the locations of these fish from talking to bass/walleye anglers about their bite offs and where these happened. These anglers have no problem tellling you about musky, a species they dont typically target. I won't tell you where I caught it - but it doesnt matter. There are big fish EVERYWHERE in Rice. Find baitfish, bass and walleye and they will be RIGHT THERE. Best part is - I honestly believe that musky couldnt care less about cold fronts, barometric pressure nonsense. This 50 incher was caught at high noon post cold front in 66F water at a depth of 7 feet. Oh and they are shallower than ever before as thats where the baitfish are. Same goes for walleye, bass etc. I caught a 21" smallmouth this past weekend in 2 ft of water (I do sometimes go for other species when I get bored) . Hope this helps! Cheers Kevin
