Hey Guys,
I am heading out to Calgary and Edmonton next week and wondering if anyone has fished out there from shore and if it is worth while to bring a rod and fish the evening's.
Just looking on Google Maps these are what I found somewhat close.
Calgary - Bow River or Glenmore Reservoir
Edmonton - North Saskatchewan River

any advice would be helpful.

Never fished either place, but when I visited Calgary a few years ago, I saw people fly fishing in the Bow River for rainbow. This was right in Calgary.

Understand there is a good fish population in the river.

Not sure if it is "catch & release", "fly fish only" or maybe even barbless hooks. Suggest you check if you plan to fish there.

Bow river has some nice rainbows and browns, small rapala countdown baits maybe 2" long in rainbow or brown trout colours. Make sure you pinch your barbs... Go south on the Deer Foot completely south of Calgary once out of town you will see the Bow river (you will cross the river a couple times in town just keep going), park in the centre median between the North and south lanes and walk down to the river. Go up stream near the island you will find one of the best pools I've fished on the river.

Take a rod... There is lots of stocked ponds full of rainbows in and around Edmonton. Was there in January with ice gear never had much luck in the ponds but some the lakes where good. They stock them every spring.
Check out the I fish alberta app it came in handy has lots of updated fishing reports and locations

Thanks for to advice guys
I will be heading out to Edmonton.
Confirmed that now but will be out in Calgary in a few weeks.
I will be in Athabasca for a day also and head the fishing there is pretty good.
The fishing licence prices in BC are pretty steep for one day but what can you do...
Plan on going by "Fishing Hole" on the first day...
Gonna buy a rod out there and bring it back. $44 to take it I can buy one for that which may be half decent....

I was in alberta last week, fished the bow, crows nest, old man, living stone and race horse. I only fly fished. On the bow the rainbows were taking emergers that particular day. My brother in law and I ended up landing 6. An old class mate of mine lives in calgary now and told me that PMDs, San Juan worms and hares ear flys work well. Cast streamers in the evenings for big browns to. Crows nest was a bust for us only landed 1 small rainbow but the living stone old man and race horse were producing good cutthrouts. We got all ours nymphing. Truly, fishing was nice but the scenery is absolutely beautiful. Hope this helps, good luck and tight lines!
