This is certainly the busiest time when it comes to fielding Ice condition phone calls. I will do my best to keep everyone informed about the North West side of Nipissing. If anyone else want's to chime in on other areas please do so.

Due to our location we are always first to ice up and first to ice off. I had posted a great start earlier on an earlier post. Things has changed a bit but are still on course. As long we don't get a ton of snow next week when the temps will rise again we should be fine. Having too many layers of crusty ice makes transportation harder and prevents the ice from thickening quickly.

Current conditions.

7" of black Ice
2" of water on top of ice
2" of crust over that
and 3" of snow to finish

Hope that helps all the info junkies out there.

Ice Update Monday Dec 22nd.

Ice is beautifully on track. Only a bit of snow on top and weather cooperating nicely.

8"-9" of black ice
1" of white ice on top
2 " snow to finish off

Could not ask for better at this time. Even though some mild temps will still come before the New Year. I see no reason for anyone to have any concerns for the the North West end of the mighty Nip. Below is a pic from inside a hole I cut.

I will post again when I test the ice at our fishing holes or if there has been any chance of changing conditions.

Deep breaths everyone and try to contain the excitement. Opening starts in just 10 days!

Went out 3 km off of the east shore of South Bay this morning. Measured anywhere from just under 10" to 13" with a pretty consistent 9" of good solid black ice. Attached pic shows the thinnest reading. We'll be good to go for Jan 1st

Just came in off the ice. Measured min 9" all the way up to 14" in one spot. A few cracks to deal with but overall we are in good shape.
