Just finally getting caught up at work, sorry for the delay. I know some of you read about how our trip to Cook's Bay was crap..blah blah blah.
Anyways, we had an AMAZING time at Casey's. I can't say we slaughtered em all weekend but I can say we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.
We got up to Port Bolster around 6:00pm Friday night and one of the things I noticed immediately was the friendly atmosphere at the inn. We were complete strangers, but the staff treated us like they'd known us for ages. From Taj and his family, to Sue and Lisa in the kitchen, to Kurt the young apprentice.
Casey's is a B&B so we ate a good dinner (pork tenderloin, mashed potatoes and corn, pecan pie & ice cream), then drank a few pops in the dining lounge and played some cards. In fact all of the meals were great. Not 5 star dining but good homestyle cook'n. After the refreshments we headed back to our room, which we called the VIP Lounge.
Got up early around 5:30 for breakfast and were finally out fishing by 7:30 or so. Started quick with a few 10 and 11 inchers and a small herring. But it was pretty slow most of the day. We ended up keeping 15 on day one (4 guys). A few were dinks with blown air bladders. I think he had us in about 30 - 35 FOW.
As you guys have heard, Taj had mechanical problems which was bad for some people, but great for us. We took full advantage and asked to be last off the ice, which was around 7:30pm I think. Randy showed up with the yellow beast.
Second Day, we were up early again. Had breakfast at 6:00, but because of the transportation issues we didn't get out there til around 8:00am. (No worries, we hear Taj has now got everything fixed up). We did a little better on our second day and kept 29 fish, but again a few we would not have kept. Average keepers for us were between 9 and 11 inches. We only got one 12 incher.
Also caught about a dozen herring when a school came by. Easy pick'ns. They were actually a little skittish with the minnows, but I dropped down a jensen egg on a hook and they hit it every time. Kept one just to try it out. How big is a big herring? Most of ours were 11 and 12 inches but we got one that was 13.5.
Highly recommend Casey's for the boys weekend. Had a great time. Don't expect the "TAJ" Mahal or anything, but it's a roof over your head and then you're back out on the lake. As mentioned, the food and service was really good. Thanks to Taj and all of his family and staff. See you next year.
And now a few pics...
