Told work it was too cold today and decided to get out to fish my spot on Joe. Got the hut set up and tip up down as quick as possible lol it was chilly!
Got the heater blasting and sent down a rattle bait hoping they would be aggressive and on fire. Dropped down and as the bait fell I could see a fish rising off the bottom. As I got to the bottom, I don't know if it was a herring school or a bunch of trout but the bottom 20 feet was solid and as I was jigging my line went taught and I set the hook on a nice 1 pounder. As I dropped back in, I noticed the activity had stopped and bottom was calm again.
Too cold to move so I went through the tackle box trying anything I had to see if I could bring some fish in. Finally I started seeing some tentative marks and began running through the baits to see what they wanted. I was reeling up and noticed some bait fish suspended below the ice and as I approached a mark appeared below me following full steam up and smoked it a nice 2 pound laker. I managed another three fish within 40 minutes all in the 1-3 pound range.
As schools of bait kept passing by so did the trout and it seemed without the bait school there were few trout around. Just a plain jig head and minnow seemed to be the ticket today!
My heater died so I packed it in around 1:30 with a total of 5 feeling pretty good about my best day this year! No big fish but a lot of fun playing with the little guys that keep coming back until you catch them lol. All fish were let go to swim another day!

Great work snoop! It's a rush landing those fish up there. Sure, they aren't lunkers but they fight good and are beautiful when you get them topside. I had my best day on Joe yesterday as well. They must like the cold weather! Thanks for the info on Muskoka, just looking to switch things up. I go to rosseau and Jo all the time but never been on the other.
