Yes, probably Lakers, although you will find people who believe there still might be a Sturgeon or two down there.

About the sturgeon, I believe you. As you talked about sturgeon I would like to tell about a fishing trip memory/story.

Many years ago in about mid 90's, when I was almost new into big game ice fishing, I rented a hut from an outfitter on simcoe. The hut was around a shoal and I was fishing over about 80 fow. I used an ordinary ice rod and had Berkley Braided Line 8LB test tied to a single hook with minnow. The hook was heavy duty japanese made. I also had a small sinker attached to my line about 7 or inches before the hook.

For bite indication I had attached a spring bober to my line at the hole. After a while I saw the float was going down in the hole. Quickly detached the spring float and tried to pull up the line but surprisingly the line was being pulled off out from my spool, not fast but steady and again surprisingly I did not feel the movement of the fish on my line. It was exactly like when your line gets snagged under a big rock in a lake.

I knew that it was a super heavy fish. I had previously caught big fish like salmon 15 lb + a lot but in open water and knew that I should somehow feel the some movement or drag by the fish when the fish is hooked. The line was being pulled away and I could not reel in the line even few inches !. finally I had no choice but to pull the line by extreme force as I was almost running out of line on my spool and while I was pulled carefully hoping not the line to snap. the tip of my rod was touching the rod handle now and suddenly zaaaap , the line was snapped and whatever was there took off.

I Pulled the line up and the line and saw it had been snapped somewhere between where I had attached the sinker and end of the line, where the hook was tied.

Up to know I was thinking it could had been a super big laker maybe 35lb + but always wondered why I did not feel any movement of the fish and why the fish did not fight back or even why I could not bring back the line AT ALL. A friend who was also a fisherman and had accompanied me on that day, he also held the rod to try and pull in the fish and he eventually gave up, for years was making fun of me and would say that I had probably hooked the " Igopogo "

Now by you mentioning the possible existence of sturgeon on Simcoe , I think it is possible the one or one of those two sturgeons on simcoe had taken my minnow on that day, still not sure. .

The idea of hooking sturgeon at one point so close to home is baffling.

I caught a 40 lb sturgeon in a Alberta river last summer . You have to be prepared . I had 10 ft rod with 20 lb braid and it still took over a half hour to land and release. Incredible fish very prehistoric looking
