Kinda late reporting but been busy. got out on tues 17th, trail was packed hard from snowmobile traffic, walk wasn"t bad but it was long! heard it was slushy the day before so i guess we picked a good day. Walked for approx 35 min and set up in 50 fow, must have bonked them on the head cause as soon as it hit bottom i pulled up a double! Fish were hot till about 9, then it slowed down, moved around a bit to see if we could find some biters to no avail, ended up returning to original holes and it picked up again for a couple hrs around 1pm. Couldnt get them to go on my bread an butter pimple, they wanted it sitting still so we ended up getting our fish on a double flouro loop rig dropshot on emeralds, spring tip made the difference in detecting the light bites in the afternoon. Ended up keeping 25 each, with each of us releasing a doz or so, nothing huge, big fish was 12 half, but the bulk were good eaters between 9 an 11 in, seemed like it was 1 throwback for every 4 fish caught, with both of us being a touch picky about size nearing our conservation limit of 25, a good day at abino in my mind. Hoping to get out mid wk, any info on conditions would be helpful, hoping i can take the bike, legs are still sore from tuesday!

I was out scouting yesterday to check travel on the ice. At Pinecrest road there was 6 trucks / trailers on shore , a small group out about 1.5 km. 1 guy came in on his sled said "sleds are fine" for travelling the ice. He also stated he had 2 buddies out there on their 4 wheelers. It was tough travel on the atvs but they did manage to get out. Fishing was slow.
Crystal beach boat launch - about 15 trucks in the parking lot & a group out there about 2 kms. I did not speak to any one at CB launch to enquire about travel conditions.

On Sat I went out of Abino. Lots of machines out, both ATVs and sleds.
Travel: The first 1km is not too bad, the next 1km is rough, really rough, this is where most ATVs got stuck. After this really bad area, going was realitive good, with some drifts to contend with, but overall not bad. I made it out to 60ft of with little issues. There was one spot where the snow was wet and slushy, i sped through without stopping.
Keep the machine moving and use 4 wheel lock, running your machine in 2 wheel drive translates in getting stuck. Also, do not load the machine down too much. I put all the weight on the back to the front could stay on top of the snow, as much as possible. Tire with good treads or a set of chains is the ticket, I run chains and have had no problems. If you see a deeper drift drive around it.
Watch out as some of the pressure cracks are shifting, so be careful when approaching them.
Fishing: The fishing was slow, very slow, nobody I talked with got many fish. I tried 40, 50, 56, 60 ft of water, moved around quite a bit and never even got to setting up the hut. I thought the rising temps would have turned the fish on, but that was not the case.
Weather: The snow was falling almost constantly, with not too much wind. For me it was not a problem. There were times when I could not see point abino.

Thanx for the reports guys. I have found Erie to be slow during the bitter cold weather (I haven't been out yet this year), as it warms up & the sun is shining brightly the bite improves. Last year we did very well with temps around -2 to +5. We needed sunscreen!

The rough travel is due to rough jagged ice chunks, which broke up then refroze. I was scouting there before we got all the snow. It looked awful for travel when only glare ice. Now comes about 1.5' of snow, it fills in the valleys & it looks smooth on top, but, under the snow is still the rough jagged ice. A sled will probably stay on top, but, a 4 wheeler is going to drop a wheel into one or more of the valleys. When walking no doubt your foot is going to sink into the same valleys. Try snow shoes.
