why dont you just call a contact number that is frequently used on the phone and say you found it

Call your own phone, with the number on call display you should be able to get a name from the s.p. I found one a few years back, couldn't find the owner. Pay as you go. Dropped it in a box to send to troops overseas.

If it's an iPhone and the owner has the find iPhone app, they can send messages/texts to the startup screen weather it's locked or not. I assume its not an iPhone though, as the owner would have done that already.
