Question about Sturgeon, What do you think ?

Now we talked about lake Sturgeon, do you think it will be a good idea that MNR or environment related organisation to think about releasing some lake Sturgeons in Simcoe ? As lake Sturgeon, goby and zebra mussels originally come from the same region and as Sturgeon is a lake bottom feeder would be able to consume lots of zebra mussels and even of those invasive gobies too. I don't know if it is a good idea or not but I was just thinking about that. Good thing about it will be whities and perch will go back to their old habits, eating minnows and fishermen would be less disappointed by fish not taking minnows.

and according to this link it seems that lake Sturgeon is an effective natural remedy for all of these invasive species in the lake. Of curse if its existence in the lake does not harm the native fish. I can not say anything about that.

If there would be sturgeon in the lake the only issue for ice anglers would be buying new line spools after any time the sturgeon cuts the line of.

Its existence in the lake would and wouldn't harm the natural fish populations. If what people are saying is true that there was a natural population previously why would it be a big impact if they were re-released? Any thoughts on getting a petition going, I'm sure a lot of members would be up for it. maybe even one going to help the walleye out in the lake.

I believe it's almost impossible to rid lakes of zebra mussels once established.

What ever happened to the sturgeon population disappearing on simcoe .Was it an environmental issue,or was it a lack of managing and over fishing ?

Could you image if the lake became overpopulated with sturgeon!

what are sturgeon like to eat?

I remember seeing a video - a few years ago - on some lake where sturgeon are harvested through the ice? And whatever ministry / jurisdiction involved - are on hand to measure and get statistics.

Or am I confusing that with another fish . .. ?

They say sturgeon tastes great. Everyone I know releases them.

Powerful fish where your drag setting is critical.

Some places they withdraw the caviar and then eat the fish. There is a company that draws the eggs out of the sturgeon without killing it. A continued source of revenue.

Sturgeon are caught here 40-60-150 plus pounds and they are released.

You want monster sturgeon without fishing in Putin's back yard, try the Columbia River.

The BIG ones are in the Fraser River BC.

They catch them accidentally in the niagara river up too 80-100 pounds, Paul Castelleno has a photo on his website of one that is probably between 40-50 pounds and healthy looking.

Lake Sturgeon were extirpated from Simcoe in the late 19th century by overfishing. Commercial returns show a total of 136,500 lbs. were sold from 1881 through 1898. No reference to the species can be found after that until the taking of a single fish in 1956. That fish is widely believed to have been one of three fish that escaped from a private pond during the Hurricane Hazel flood of 1954.

Sturgeon

i've seen a few now, the two last spring i saw swiming downstream while i was trout fishing were pushing 5 feet absolute monsters i'm hoping there is an open season for them in the comming years i'd love to fish for them in the back yard

Yes ; There are lots of sturgeon in Ontario..

Yes ; They are delicious, bought a few steaks from fish stand on lake Superior, tasted more like veal than fish..

Not sure on how keen re re-introducing.. All of the fish I've caught be it here or in BC have been on roe..would this affect our trout and whitefish spawning success

Fighting capabilities..Like hooking your line to a fast moving truck and feeling totally under gunned...These monsters will jump, sometimes clear of the water,sounds like a bath tub being thrown in on reentry..

All areas I know of do "NOT" allow harvest of these fish, In the Fraser there has even been talk of restricting C&R....Thinking is , it stresses their spawning process ??

There are sturgeon in Lake Nipissing and it is quite a show when one comes through taking out line after line after line while icefishing . Lol I still remember years ago in my misspent youth fishing the mighty Nip and we used to use coat hangers as our bite indicators . Big ol sturgeon came through and all the lines went down . Hearing those coat hangers hitting the froze over holes and the heavy line breaking was quite the thing to behold . Lol

Back in the late 70 early 80 someone fishing trout on a river on Lake Huron caught a sturgeon about 100 lbs. there are many in the Ottawa river and the St, Lawrence. Here is a pic of my son with a small one caught ice fishing, He was on the Ottawa south of Carillion Dam. He got 3 that year,
