It is my understanding that yes, they seem to breed in rivers..... But there are folks who have created large fields of rocks, and sturgeon and other fish use them for laying their eggs. I guess the eggs stick to these rocks. Seems that there is a way to promote their habitat and growth. Can Lake Simcoe handle it? I have no idea. Cost issues. It would be great to see these prehistoric monsters brought back to LS and other lakes. Have no intentional targeting of these fish for a few years and anyone who takes one and keeps it, a $10,000. fine and a loss of fishing for 5 years. Hit them hard with $$$ if you are really serious about protecting these dinosaurs. Strictly catch and release after a few years.
Caviar can be very expensive. Some small tins command approx $5-600.00 each. Poachers.............
We have several small lakes locally and they have sturgeon. 20-40-100-250 pounds plus. Locally, record is just over 250 pounds on 12# test. 2 plus hours to bring it in and CPR.
These ancient giants are beauties and deserve to have an opportunity to live on. It's up to humans to decide.
Killing for caviar.........
