Reading a spark plug, What do you think.

I only use Shell V power in my gas toys. It contains NO ethanol. Ethanol is the death sentence of all gas powered equipment. I use the appropriate amount of gas stabilizer even in my jerry can especially in the winter. Your plug looks dark, it should be dry with a brown color. Is the plug oily? If so gas mix is getting pas the piston ring. This happened on my atv - every time I pulled the plug it was oily. I ended up honing the cylinder, new piston & rings. It's now all good.

Changed the plug this morning…..started 2nd pull….went fishing….nadda…..LOL

I just want to laugh or cry….not sure which!!

Anyway, its almost over and will use my manual auger till its over.

Whoever put a hex on my power auger, I'm sorry, please remove if you can see it in your heart! For whatever I did, I'm sorry, I did not mean to hurt anyone.

I've had the exact same issue with two of these augers. Both times I sent away for the replacement carb kits from Yetmans in Saskatchewan and both times it didn't work. I've never been able to figure out what it was. Compression was good. Spark was good. Filter was getting soaked both times so I moved that fuel line a bit and still nothing. Tried Amsoil and SeaFoam and still nothing. I ended up selling them for parts and got a third one. Now i'm on my 3rd season with it and sooo far all is good. Would anyone know if these engines have intake and exhuast valves? One time when my lawn mower wouldn't start I took out the intake and exhaust valves and lightly sanded the edges and it fire right up and is still running to this day. Be sure to post if you figure it out.

No intake or exhaust valves if it's a two stroke.

X2 most common repair in my shop is fuel related. Most high test on the market does not contain ethanol. What does contain ethanol is reg gas and some mid grades and the HOSE that has reg gas about 2-5lt in it from the guy before you who didn't want to pay $ for prem . So when buying prem gas in small qty always pump 5lt into your car first. And never put gas line antifreeze in a small engine because it is pure alcohol only going to do more harm then good. As far as your problem if the auger is less then 6 months old return to dealer as I have had a few do this and it was carb related problem and replaced carb and have not seen them back for repair. hope this helps

What Gas to Oil Ratio are you using?
Have to agree with Miro on one of his points as well, get it running indoors where its warm, loosen off the vent cap, take it outside and run the bejesus out of it and see if it still quits on you.

to me, i wonder what happens between home and the ice...

is it stored upright and warm?

how is it transported?

i would also try starting it when i reach the ice as well

maybe it is how it is be taken out to the ice?

will it start now after not starting on ice?

Let's not over think the ethanol. It effects certain types of plastics and is not good to store your machine with it in it. It won't effect the octane amount.

You might be on to something about traveling with it on it's side banging around. A 2 stroke should not be effected by position, but it could jiggle an air bubble in the gas line, but I doubt that would have much effect.

Yank on it for a while and check the plug. Wet and it's not fuel. Soaked and it's too much fuel etc.

I hate to say it, but you need to have some knowledge of basic of motors to figure these things out.

I'll give anyone $50 for a non running auger

Probably water in gas. Not uncommon on any 2 stroke machine. (sled etc) Drain all fuel and get fresh mixture. Run machine out of fuel in warm garage if possible before putting new fuel in.

As long as it runs when its warm, I have some fence posts that need to go in!!!

I bought a "top of the line" 10" 3hp Jiffy a few years ago and it's giving me the same headache. The first couple of seasons weren't bad and I chalked any starting issues to not knowing the finnicky starting procedure. It has never completely failed to start but after 40 or so pulls, I'm almost as tired as I would be drilling holes manually. As time goes by it seems to be getting worse. Always a precise mixture, always premium fuel, always seafoamed, new plug... doesn't matter. Jiffy customer service was no help at all.

If you find it abandoned with a free sign attached at an access point someday, my advise is not to pick it up, lol!

We has some similar problems as well with our Eskimo. A co-worker took it apart to have a look and said the choke system was a joke. He said the best thing to do was put it on it's side filter side up, open the choke, prime the bulb a couple times, close the choke and then pull.

The way it is set up, it just squirts gas generally into the carb and if it is on it's side, gravity will help get the most gas in the carb.

Hello I had rapala I had trouble start it so send it fix first time say gas cap no good so got new cap then next time went out ice fishing I start up in garage that has heater it fire up easy then I go ice fishing about half hr sit in cold weather won't start at all so bring back in garage for 15 min with heater it fire up then I put outside 30 min it won't start so I sent it back to fix been fix for 3 week wtf soon ice gone
Hope get it soon for this Sunday to test it before I put away for summer

I put gold gas and top oil to mix and little antifreeze gas so won't freeze still same so let pray they fix

well I had the same problem with mine a few years back. it was calling for 30to1 for oil.. so I went to 50to1 just like the chainsaw. and no more problems . give that a try if you have a 2 stroke

Thanks for all the suggestions and advice. As one member stated above, must have some knowledge of small engines. So I will tinker and learn and if not, I will take it to somebody who has the knowledge! I'm not going to worry much about it now as the season is for the most part over.
