Back in the day B4 herring seasons were closed we used to catch a bunch and released almost all. Some days you would see schools of " Blue Backs" some of these ran up to 2lbs..Also used them for trout bait..

Our go to lure was the smaller williams with a pearl on a dropper, this was a killer and the whities and trout would also hit ..

Enclosed pix of rig..

My buddy kills whities with those to this day also mentioned to me when he was a kid and his uncle would take him to Simcoe, they would also catch herring for trout bait.

I find the slab grabber to work pretty good as well.

I have a few small Williams that I need to clean and replace hooks anyways. Might make a couple of those you shown.

Interesting rig, I'm sure it kills the herring. My standard perch rig with the slab grabber on the bottom and the dropshot hook with a minnow up the line seems to do pretty well for the herring too. Last outing we got 5 two on slab grabbers three on minnows.

I'm no expert at all, and was the first time I was able to fish for them, but it seemed like they couldn't resist a red jensen egg on a small hook. No hesitation whatsoever.

They weren't as aggressive with the spoons or minnows.
