Yes Andy 14, I also agree with you wholeheartedly.
My thoughts: Temperatures, time of day will affect the fish bite. When the sun is up fish tend to go deeper. Dirty water, clear water are all factors. Bite is slow or none at all, some folks will say "there are no fish here." True, maybe, but if you have done your homework, there are fish. They simply aren't hungry. This is where we all have to think out of the box and become creative. Too many folks just go through the motions, over and over.......
INSANITY: Doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.

I'm just trying to encourage some folks on these blogs to get out of their own way. We all know how to fish, but as fish get smarter, less fish to catch, much greater fishing pressure, we all have to open our minds, stand back and review how we fish. What should we do differently? How do we do it? There are so many variables in this great pastime.
I believe in logging what changes u make, document changes because in a short time it all runs together and you really don't recall what you did differently to hook that fish and usually you end up going back to what was simple or comfortable.
WE all just need to stay open minded........ and be willing to try anything to get more strikes.
It is the ability to get fish to react and bite even when they are not feeding.

I like reading these replies. It is encouraging! I am going out on my first trip with rented gear next saturday from Jackson's Point. I am hoping to catch some jumbo's. I will report back on my post where I asked for help on going out on my own. To which I also recieved a lot of advice and enouragement.
Good luck to all the frustrated fishermen and myself.

Hope you do well.
To catch fish (and not just fish) luck is not part of the equation.
catching fish is based on homework, having the right equipment, in the right place, with the best presentations for that water body. And if nothing happens - move or change presentation.
A couple or so posts above - Tuna states the same thing - different words.
Some members on this site consistently post reports of their fish! Luck??? No - it is result of their hard work to learn what works and to adapt when bite changes (or move).

Same for me, keep getting skunked. I have used every method in the book + plus changed my location about 3-4 times a day...nothing, only dinks. very disappointing.

Morning!!
Was out on Saturday for my first ice fishing day in many many years. Had a ton of fun! Rented a hut and spent the whole day there.
I've never fished for perch "intentionally"....lol....but have caught many off the dock at the cottage. But after catching some monsters on Simcoe on Saturday I'd have to say that the one's I've caught in the past would be bait for these bad boys.
I know that catches have been hit and miss this season and in fact on Saturday, two huts near us got 2 fish and 0 fish respectively. We got 13 and they were all nice size. My biggest was almost 14"!!!!!! Maybe you gusy are used to those kind of sizes but I'm not. It looked like a freakin' football!!
Had my feed last night. I'll be back as it was great fun.

I have a rule and people call me crazy... I stick with it and seems to work. Sunny days I hit deep water for laker and whities... They seem to like the extra light and I find them active. Sunny days I would not go for perch. They seem to turn off in my experience. Overcast days I find the perch are extremely active. White fish and lakers hit too on overcast... But I never got an extremely good day on overcast days for lakers and white fish.
X2.
on the days where the sun is strong with occsional clouds are the BEST!
i don't really fish perch, but I see them in the hundreds swimming around in the summer. Never have a problem picking them up on software as moving to find them is easy.

I agree, I remember I was out with some guys last year. Had caught a few "jumbos" and was pleased with how my morning was going. Went hut hopping to see how the others were doing and was blown away when I saw what a real simcoe Jumbo is! Hard to call them panfish at that point!
I do feel sorry for you though, I am sure that there is going to be a number of large investments and lack of sleep in your future now that you have re-found how fun this can be!

i always get enough for a feed, jigging is a big key as well.......short jerks while lifting rod, from almost vibrating to even small bouncing to bigger erratic jigs, which ill usually use with a slab grabber...then stop, thats usually when they will hit.....

Excellent picture. Took me back 64 years ago when my father took me fishing for perch. Been doing it ever since.
What a happy little boy. Priceless pic.
He loves to get out. HIs species list is pretty good. A laker in the boat (with a star wars rod. Lost at the boat) whitey on the stick earlier this winter, walleye at the cottage, and some pretty good perch. I've moved my hut for the last couple of weeks just so I can take him out. Almost daily. I hope he's hooked for life. Seem to have put it in a good spot. Getting tons of big perch.
