First time out for whitey's

Well finally gout out for a real attempt to land my first whitey, or laker. I have only been out twice this year with minimal time and no shelter/electronics. I decided on renting from a local operator recommended by a friend which included use of a graph. I have never used one before so I was excited for this learning experience.

The operator got me set up with the graph and a balanced tip-up, which I had never used before. Showed me how to mark the graph, see the fish, risers and humps etc. Thanks to this site and the amazing info I have read through I had a good idea what to look for on the finder, and tips on what to do for the chase.

Saw lots of action on bottom today and missed a few hits on the tip-up. Also had a few chasers today for my first real chase experience. Kind of exhilarating!! No takers though.

Needless to say I finally got out this year for a real fish which was the important part. Huts were in excellent shape and the operators were very helpful! I learned a lot about the use of the finder and will be purchasing one for sure this week! No more fishing blind for this guy!!

Still a few days left to try to pop that cherry!!

Glad you had a good learning experience. Would of been perfect if you landed one or two. These whitefish do not nibble like perch. They are usually are one hit type of fish. That is why a tip-up is great for those who are not prepared. The tip ups can give you an extra second or so to react. For rod users I do recommend you have the rod in your hands. As much as my brother thinks differently... I swear he does it to tick me off and picks up the rod after the bite has come and gone. But oddly he gets a lot of bites and will hook up his share of fish. With the finder/flasher you can get ready. React right away on a nibble or bite.... do not think twice and set the hook!

Good report.......and a good idea to go with operator that will show you the ropes on fishing .

WF lifts can be faster than what many believe and usually happen when you just turn away.

You'll get them sooner than later.

Good post for others in similar situation - infrequent fishing of the white and lake fish and no flasher.

Good to here a story like this, and sounds like a good operator don't be afraid to name drop as part of your positive experience man.

Shows, that if you take the time a research some older posts on this sight, there is nor reason anyone can't get out and give it a honest try.

Was a good read, getting me going for the weekend.
