We arrived at Lake Joe Monday around 9 AM----Allan Halls(aka 3 Post Al) and I. Wind was in the forecast but who believes the forecast anyway? Allan had brought his Eskimo pop-up just in case. As soon as we stepped out of the shelter and unto the lake it was obvious that bringing the tent was a good idea. We walked the short dist out to about 120 ft of water and set up. We both much prefer to fish in the open but I must admit that being in the tent was not as claustrophobic as I thought. Lots of windows help.
Allan was ‘on the board’ with an average small Lake Joe laker after about an hour. I figure that my training is starting to pay off. That’s one better than he did the last time! It was a bit slow and about an hour later I hooked one but I fell victim to the old ‘lost it at the hole’ trick’. It must have been twice the size of Allan’s though. Maybe a 1/2 hr later I was finally on the board too with one just slightly bigger than his. We had a couple of more nibbles and a couple lost after reeling a few secs. Then it went dead and we left about 3 PM.
It was a good day out nonetheless. I lit my single burner propane camp stove and that took the chill off. One advantage of being inside was that our holes didn’t ice over and our lines didn’t ice up, at least not much. I drilled a second hole outside but took a few minutes before I got back to it with my rod. By that time the hole had disappeared under the drifting snow. Wind gusts were about 40 kph according to Env Canada. “Snow devils” (Little vortices) blew down the lake. Part of our entertainment was watching 2 guys upwind come out of their tent and fish in the open. Either things were pretty slow at the holes inside or somebody must have letting a few ripe ones rip. Part of my entertainment was watching Allan fiddle with his Lowrance FF as our lure down near the bottom faded in and out like a bad radio station.
