Since I think now is the time to buy one, I think I'm in the market for one but I'm not sure on which make. I see a lot of yammys (ventures) with some serious k's on them and no mention of engine overhauls, yet I see a lot of ski-doo's (grand touring) which I know some guys on here praise with half the k's or less and they've had to rebuild the engine already. Are there certain ski-doo grand touring models to stay away from? and what do you think about these Yamahas with the high k's

Most of the yamis are four strokes , hence the higher k's without issue. As most doo,s are 2 strokes unless it's a1200 which is a four stroke. Won't need a rebuild on a 4 stroke very often but When you do get the wallet out .

I do a ton of sleddingbeyond ice fishing I've never had a motor on a 2 stroke last me 10000k without a prior rebuild I usually get about 7-8k on one. However it is used hard. I've seen and spoken to many guys while touring with well over 40,000k on their yammy 4 strokes and still going strong. I'm not a four stroke guy but for just a fishing rig I think it would be ideal. Or a fan cooled 2 stroke is the next best bet strictly for fishing. Imho

Take a look online at used sleds for sale. There are sleds out there with 30 and 40k miles without a rebuild. They're not 2 strokes. There's a reason why cars are 4 strokes. MotoX bikes, outboards, yard equipment….are mostly 4 stroke now. Wont be long before most sleds are. People are stubborn and are naturally resistant to change.

No the Yamahas I'm talking about with the high k's were 2 strokes anywhere from 12-22 thousand km. Unless these guys aren't mentioning that some engine work has been done ? Thanks Bayliner for the link looks like I got some reading to do

Im a Skidoo guy all the way so that being said i say go skidoo. The Ace motors are very good not high horsepower but great for fishing or cruising, the other option is the 600 carbed engine not the E-tec. i currently have a 2002 legend 600 with 15500 kms on it and going strong, all original under the hood. Just my 2 cents.

Its been a few years so i could be wrong so nobody jump on me for this. But providing the cylinders and heads are ok i would think between 8 and 9 hundred. Half of that is labor. But you would have to check with a dealer once you find a model you are interested in. ONLY buy original parts for motor rebuilds. Myself....just for fishing/pulling a hut(large or small) i would look for a yamaha VK540 fan cooled. With a few studs these things are awesome. But i am a yamaha fan.
Bottom line...all depends on how much you are willing to spend.

Rebuilds can easily cost as much as an older sled is worth. Putting new pistons and rings in is not a rebuild. That just freshen things up. Obviously it depends on the make and model. A new/rebuilt crank will be north of 5 bones. Two pistons with rings , wrist bearings etc. will be over 3. I've had good luck with wisco and they come with everything. Gasket kit 1-150. Add that up and double the price to cover labour and your in the ball park.

Stealhead is correct. I have blown up a few two strokes in the day as i use to race bikes and sleds. But haven't had to replace a crank. Just its bearings and seals for piece of mind if i had to split the case. That doesn't mean that you wouldn't have to. So as he stated, throw in a rebuilt crank and a couple of cylinders and it could easily cost you the price of the used sled.

Your own mechanical ability is also something consider if you are able to fix/ maintain it yourself or have to run back to dealer for repairs drastically changes cost...if I was in the place to buy a new one it would definetly be skidoo but I was born and raised skidoo and am very stubborn

We keep seeing these threads about guys wanting a sled. Are they clueless or are we? They don't mention budget and then they don't reply to our posts? Are you spending $500 or $15,000? I have read my owners manual and I don't see anywhere that says this is a cheap sport. Rant over ......
