put it on a baitcasting rod
x2 Pitching or casting with a baitcaster reel needs a lot of control on the spool at times. If you do not have a good hold of the rod and not have your thumb over the spool part of the reel... you will be sick and tired of bird nesting.

Depending on how much fishing your going to do I would stick with a spinning reel !!!!!avoid any potential head aches!!!!! Just my 2cents!!!!
Nah... go big or go home! It is really fun pulling big fat bass out of the weeds flip jigging. Spinning rods just not the same when using heavy jigs. But to each their own... learning to use a baitcasting rod and reel takes time to perfect. So tell the wife or whoever.... that you need to spend a lot of time to perfect it.
I sort of don't fully agree when he wrote that baitcasters can hold heavier line. With the Shimano Stella spinning reels, you can run 85, 100 pound Power Pro. Larger tuna, marlin, sailfish, sharks......... no problem. Their drag system is magical. The smaller Stellas could be used in lakes. Cost is a factor.
I agree with fishmagnet!!
Both styles are great. It's a personal choice.......

I bought a bait caster combo four or five years ago when starting back into fishing. Started using it - birds nests. On the casts that worked - great unit!
Haven't had time to practice on it since - when I'm fishing I'm fishing (sometimes catching) then haven't the time for learning the detail of a bait caster. Perhaps this summer . . .

rayray89: Oh I agree. The cost of a Stella for freshwater is brutal. There are no freshwater fish that pull that hard to require such a solid drag system. But why would you state that they are retarded for buying them, if they choose to buy them?
For some who pursue the large fish that can run 2-3-400 yards and burn drags for an extended amount of time, the Stella is fine for those who want to use the coffee grinder.
Again, my Stella comment was in response to the writer who said that the baitcaster reels hold heavier line than the spinners, is not entirely accurate.
Hey bluenote, get a baitcaster in your yard, steal a wooden clothespin or just buy a plastic casting plug and practice casting. Tell your wife you're busy and have her cut the grass! The practice will pay off in short time and you won't waste fishing time.

Once you start using a baitcaster you will see how much more control and accuracy casting .you will have compared to a spinning reel. I have a few off the Johnny Morris line from Bass Pro and are very happy with them. They always have them on sale in there flyers, and being there own brand they really stand behind them.

Once you go BC you never go back! Does it take some time to dial in to the settings, casting technique, thumbing control? Sure, but noting is better than a BC reel once you get used to it. Spinning has its place, but I have not had a spot for SC on any fishing trip in 20 years.
As others mentioned... eyelette position, and many other factors just make the rod and reel matching a must.
I still recall the Team Daiwa reel (the first sexy looking BC reel)... I think my In-Fisherman magazine was as "worn" as my borrowed Penthouse.

Dude! That Team Daiwa!!!! I'm a goofy caster (Lefty) so I could not even see and feel it in person. Back then, you had to order the lefty in from the US.
Being 12 years old, and riding your bike to go to "Hookers" in Streetsville was always an interesting thing to tell your parents. (Hookers was a fishing store in Streetsville, not a hootchy working the corner) lol
Not to get off topic, but Bell Distributors by the 403 and Winston Churchill... OMG heaven for the fisherman back before BPS! lol
