Hi Folks:
Haven't personally been out and about much this winter due to the fact I have been under the weather for weeks - so I haven't been posting much if at all lately.
This evening we crossed the lake twice from Island Grove to Snake Island on both an ATV (with chains on all 4 tires) and a ski-doo.
This is what we encountered - no open/clear ice patches in site but rather snow as far as the eye could see. There was very minimal if any snow drifts, however, the snow for the most part is not well packed. As a result, travelling by ski-doo was a breeze in fact the conditions we encountered were ideal for travel via a ski-doo. Travel by ATV was OK but we are used to travel in poor snowy conditions - with tire chains. I would suggest trying to find a well travelled route to avoid getting stuck in snow. Also, "get up to speed" (whatever you are comfortable with) as quickly as possible when you access the lake and don't slow down until you arrive at your destination. In addition, try to keep the total weight of supplies to a minimum to avoid digging into the snow and finally take along a shovel.
To any walkers - I personally didn't attempt to walk on the lake but I would suspect walking might be difficult unless you follow a well travelled route where the snow has been packed down and it might be wise to travel as light as possible.
Given the fact this is the second last weekend for permanent huts on the lake this winter along with the fact the weather conditions are suppose to be nicer - I suspect there will be a lot of people interested in heading out on the lake this weekend.
If there are any changes in lake conditions over the weekend I will post an update.
Hope this information is helpful to board members.

Hi Wormdunker:
I would love to be able to go fishing for a few hours. Unfortunately, I have been sick with the world's worst cold for 6 weeks as of Saturday/today and despite taking antibiotics I can't seem to get rid of it. I don't risk getting cold or chilled. Last night I wore foot warmers in my boots and although I was out less than a hour I ended up with a chill and even with the woodstove burning at a pleasant 29 C all night I couldn't get rid of the chill.
I will ask around about how great this fishing in this area. Yes, I think I am overdue for a good fish dinner!!!

Wow that's a serious cold! Wood stove at 29C & you're still chilled - not good. I hope you get well soon. I've had many good outings fishing around Snake so of course I read all your reports. One day I had to stop fishing to count my catch before I headed to shore. I'm sure you know why??

Drink lots of orange juice. Vitamin C is one of the best cures for colds. All i drink is water an OJ when im sick and usually gets rid of it within a 2-3 days.

Hi Folks:
Thanks for all the positive advice both on this site, PM and via email on how to deal with my cold.
Unfortunately, I am allergic to oranges - but I rely on cranberry juice for my Vitamin C intact.
I may take piercer up on his advice of a "good stiff shot", however, I have never been a fan of booze in any form BUT if there is any chance it will clear up this cold I am willing to give it a try.
To be perfectly honest - I adore chocolate and in fact I think it should be made a major food group on Canada's Food Guide. Since I have encountered my recent cold - I couldn't be bothered with chocolate. In fact, when I was offered chocolate and declined it - everyone I know nearly had a stroke - due to the fact in my book chocolate is king.
Slowly but surely I am starting to feel better. I went out on the lake for a short ride this afternoon and a bit of walk and with any luck (not to mention a good stiff shot) I won't have any problems this evening.
Something I have started using and I find has made a difference with the cold weather this winter and might be of interested to other board members are the "HOTHANDS" Insole Foot Warmers with Adhesive. I bought these a year or so ago and never used them but due to the fact I have been freezing this year and constantly get a chill when I go outside for even a few minutes I starting sticking the insoles on my socks as per the package instructions. I have used the hand warmers in the past and was pleasantly surprised how well they worked but I wasn't sure how well the foot warmers would work. Based on my experience - I have found this product has helped to keep my feet warm and toasty and I will continue to use this product in the future and I would recommend them to anyone who tends to suffer from cold feet. If anyone has used the foot warmers I would be interested in your thoughts on the product.
