We didn't really have special plans for fishing this weekend so I contacted Jerry to see what he was up to. He had no plans as well so we decided to hit up the lake we fished a couple of weeks ago to get some crappie or walleye.

When we arrived there were lots of people already there, it seems like this place has become very popular which is not a good thing for a small lake. There were tons of huts out on the ice and it looked like there was even a family event going on with a rental party tent set up on the ice with about 50 people fishing around it.

Trying to get away from the main groups of huts we found a spot and set up. We were hoping to open air fish as it was fairly nice out but the hole kept freezing up and since we have braid on most of our rods, we set up the hut. Jerry also set up his hut since the slip bobber kept freezing up.

We marked fish right away and there were even some really big ones but very few fish were willing to bite. We were there for about 5hs and there was always a wave of small perch under us but not much action. I managed a really nice crappie at about 12:30 and put it in a bucket with water just in case we didn't catch any more. It was a good thing that I did since that was the only keepable fish caught that day so I released it. Jerry managed about 8-10 perch but they were showing evidence of grubs so all were released.

The COs were also out checking which is good to see but they were saying fishing had been slow recently. As usual, it was a great time fishing with Jerry again but unfortunate that the fish were uncooperative.

Here is the 12" crappie I caught...

One more would have made a dinner for two but for me, it's not worth getting out the filet knife and getting dirty for. Let it swim and make more babies for future fishing trips.

Nicole, seems the spot is popular for big gatherings??? One of the times we were there last year there was a big group out together, must have had at least 5 huts and 15-20 people all hanging out together with a communal kitchen setup. Weird.

Hi Nicole. Nice of you to leave that 1 lber for me lol was also out Saturday, what a zoo!! Only managed four pike and a twin of your crappie. All released. Was very slow day, too much commotion up top and seemed to be lots of pike in area. Thats the way it goes some days. Will only improve as we get nearer to end of ice out. Goodluck next time.

Great time as usual out with Glenn & Nicole. As usual Nicole won our mini fishing derby with the one crappie. LOL Beauty Slab..

I only managed some dink perch, biggest was about 7in. Agreed it was too noisy up top of the ice. But it was a Sat and weather was nice and people were having fun..
That's how it goes.

We decided to setup outside the hut pack, maybe inside the hut pack was better, I don't know, but it sounds like it was just a slow day all around..

O well, at least I got out and better than sitting at home.. Every trip is a learning experience and eventually we'll get into the fish.. Just keep trying..
