Not seeing many folks on here talking about the Simcoe Bug (whatever colour your choose) so just wondering if they are decent or what?
Used a bright one today that got nada, but when tipped with a small minnow it did pretty good......was it the minnow or the combo that caught them. Was nice to see a few schools of jumbos swim by, but they just bumped the baits and moved along.

It was the minnow for sure. I was fishing last weekend with my brother and I was using a simcoe spreader with only two minnows and he was using a bright pink spoon with a minnow and I still took home more and the biggest fish fishing from the next whole over with only minnows. I feel sometimes your lure with minnow can get too bulky and suspicious for the fish.
We saw them hung up on my brothers lure deciding whether to hit or not whereas mine they were trying to figure out how to steal my bait. Bottom line is fish that are hungry and want to feed want live fish that they know for sure are real fish. Plus emerald shinners on a bright day like today can be very visible as well as a bright or flashy lure. I like to tap the top of my rod with my minnows on it to get the reflection of the side of their body in all directions under the ice. Seemed to work for me last weekend well off 9th line access.

Also, If you put a minnow on a treble hook your much more likely to hook up a fish than a regular bait hook. I used a regular medium sized reverse hook with my spreader but I don't use treble hooks cuz they rip the crap outta the fishes mouth and throat when they hit hard. Plus treble hooks you end up reeling up your line to dislodge a small fish with a big appetite that you really have no interest in eating or fighting with.

Thoughts?
I've heard about the simcoe bug, but never saw one, and can't find a decent picture. Could you post one, to give me an idea what to look for? They receive mention in the tips section here.

Treble hooks just get in the way. Long shank worm hooks, split shot in shallow water is pretty deadly. Couple this with another hole and a search bait and you should do pretty fine. Oh yeah.....I love my Simcoe bug. If you drop shot it you'll often get hooked up with it and not your minnow.
