What's with this softwater bass talk??? LOL
Joking.. With spring around the corner, even I have been dreaming of sitting in the boat casting into the lily pads..
I am a diehard spinning reel fisherman, those are my go to outfits for all types of fishing. BUT a few years ago I got tired of lossing big bass and pike that were buried in the weeds. Yes you can put heavy line on spinning reels these days with the invention of braid, but I still found it difficult to control a big bass in the slop... So I bought a Baitcasting outfit.. Wanted an entry level setup and did some reasearch, and actually wanted to buy the Shimano Curado, but it was expensive at the time as they just came out so went with this reel.
http://www.basspro.com/Bass-Pro-Shops-Extr...11092105011121/It had good reviews and a nice braking system, which is the second most important component of the BC reels. The first most important component is your thumb...... And yes, the BPS Extreme comes in LH retrieve, if you are used to spinning, forget the RH reels you will just tangle your arms together.. It's not a natural transition.
Yes practice, I to am guilty of casting it in the backyard for hours on end, just rig it with a nice bass jig and tape over the hook so you don't get constantly snagged in the grass and practice casting -- pitching, side and overhand. Hey I even got a bite from a "catfish" in the yard. One day when I was practicing a cat came running out of the bushes and slammed my jig and wouldn't let it go.. LOL Another good reason to tape up / remove the hooks..
Anyway, I use the baitcaster mainly for frogging and pitching and it makes a world of difference controlling and landing heavy cover bass. I have it spooled with 65lb power pro braid and paired with Heavy action 7ft Shimano Clarus.
You will have to learn how to setup the brake for different lures, use your thumb and cast into the wind. First thing you have to subdue is the hard forward snap you are so used to when casting a spinning reel, the forward snap will just get you bird nested. Use more finesse during the cast, you don't need a heavy forward motion to get the rod and reel to cast, a smooth motion and lob is all you need to get the system to cast. If this all makes sense.... Anyways, I am no expert by no means, but BCs have their place as a great outfit to help you land more fish..
