Yeah, it took some getting used to. Now I am good with it, but the first few times out were a bit odd. Felt like I was using a spinning rod the wrong way.

Links didn't work for me so I'll just relate my experience with leadcore. I use a 7ft Okuma classic pro rod for leadcore and find it perfect for fishing out of the canoe. I also use an 8ft but prefer the shorter one on the canoe trips. Also, you don't really need a line counter reel since the leadcore is colour-coded. On the smaller northern lakes where I have fished Lake Trout in the Algonquin / Haliburton Highlands region, I've found 4 colours to be the sweet spot most times.

I have a wireline rod , a few rigger rods that I also run dipseys off of and a leadcore rod . I couldn't tell you whats what at the moment because they are buried away . No need for a linecounter as was mentioned when running leadcore but heah if you have a reel with a counter that is fine too . I can't figger which rod your running by the link either . Get a hold of Longshank on here because he puts on more miles in a season trolling than most . And if he yells at you to watch the rod tips just pay him no mind .

My rod of choice up at the cottage for leadcore is a Shakespeare Ugly stick Catfish Series in 8 foot. Very economical but still the Ugly Stick Backbone. 7 foot is 1 piece 8 foot is 2 piece.
LeBarons and BassPro carry them. They might even come with a trigger model if you prefer(I don't)

Kind of depends on how many colors you want to load up.
Thn fewer colors, say 3-5 you can get away witha shorter rod. if going with 10 color, I would stick with a 9 foot rod minimum. Myself I run and eagle claw 10 foot fwith 10 color core and I run line counters always as my floro leader is 100-150 feet. The eagle claw is very affordale and has a nice bend and give to it for 'surging' your line while it's set out.
I'm sure you can get away with whatever your are comfortable with plus your budget

I've used a dipsy for the past couple years with virtually no success, I have a 8ft okuma combo with line counter reel, any suggestions for lb test or brand line to use? Also my dipsy came with the chart to estimate approx depth / ft of line out, can I do the same with lead core? Don't mean to hijack but you guys seem knowledgeable on the subject! Thanks!
