Headed up to Gull again to press my luck on some lakers. Pulled up to deep bay to see a large portion of open, moving water. After speaking to some locals we learned that the ice was safe and the open water was normal, so we continued on. The ice was very thick, easily 18 or 24 inches thick and a pain to manually drill through... oh yeah, and it was raining. Despite the rain (and later high winds) we ended up getting our portable hut set up and caught two small but mighty lake trout which were released immediately and safely. First one was caught on a small williams whitefish and the second, mine, was caught on a pearl Berkley minnow on a drop shot rig. Had several other hits on the drop shot which was presented slow with an action just enough to make the forked tail of the minnow kick. It seemed that the trout were going after a slower finesse style presentation.
Overall good day and I hope to go back again before the ice is out
