QUOTE (Fishing Rod @ Apr 09, 2015 - 08:50 am)
Actually they set the levels in the fall in anticipation of the snow we got last year and we got the opposite. And this no rain melt has made it worse.
I don't buy that Rod. I saw a documentary on it. In that documentary, the MOE checks snow levels and density all winter in the higher regions. The MOE then sends this info to the engineers that maintain the waterway in the off season. Then they will watch weather and forecasts and adjust dams as needed to maintain a proper level in the system. This method works until the politicians get involved and trump it.
My neighbor used to work the waterway. He's told me the "inside" stories. It's bloody sick how the politicians will put several thousand homes at risk simply for cheap hydro electric generation. Last years flood was just to hold back water for cheap power to offset the 1.1 billion dollar gas plant scandal.
The flood of 2008 in the lower Trent was caused by alterations to the waterway. Rather than doing things the way they had for years, they used computers to look after the waterway. They gave a lot of employees the golden handshake and replaced them with a computerized system. The result, thousands of homes flooded.
I give up. I voted and it sure as hell wasn't for the Liberals.

Good info John. I re-read the document that I thought stated the once a year drain and it indeed does not. Actually it sort of beats around the bush after a second read.
You have to accept the disclaimer first before entering the site. There's a lot of information and data there but you have to poke around to find some of it. Unfortunately, as John has said, all those good intentions go out the window when the leftard criminals from Queen's Park stick there oar in where it doesn't belong.
All that said, I note with interest that Scugog is in better shape than some right now. I am assuming, of course, that the data is to be trusted.

Great pics and great responses. My father in law had pics of the same water levels in north pigion and the bald lakes. I just hope who ever is involved or the mystic person who controls the water levels knows what he or she is doing. My question now is will it affect the fishing as much as we think it will? Is it just a myth, or possibly make it better? I think your guess is as good as mine but I can't wait to get out and prove theory's wrong. I look forward to future reports on the pike, walleye, Muskie and bass this year on all the kawartha lakes. I'll be sure to post my findings and hopefully a pic or two. Hope the spring fishing is good for us all but time will tell!

Here on Simcoe, we're still below where we should be on this date, similar to last year though so it will probably continue to rise for some time yet. It did last year and this year seems to be following a somewhat similar curve. If anything it's later and slower than last year so we could have a very late ice out. The ice really hasn't changed much here on the north side of Thorah for several days.

I'm on Nogies Creek that's on the north end of Pigeon Lake and I'm standing where I normally park my boat. This time last year the water was over the docks. A lot of the area on Pigeon where the Walleye spawn is now exposed rock. 😞

I realize this isn't the Nipissing forum but to add to the discussion Nipissing is low this year as well. I have been keeping track for the last 4 years from data posted Monday mornings to the public works and government web site and as of this past Monday the lake is 18" below the long term average. I pump water out of the lake and was sucking air this past Friday evening. The run off from the melt and rain Friday helped and I was back in business Saturday evening.
The level was high this past fall and they have been dumping out the French River all winter. Unfortunately someone was asleep at the switch once the level got to the long term average and they continued to dump. Hopefully there is a lot of rain this spring.
The water inlet is around 7 feet measured during boating season.
Attached document shows the water levels on Nipissing since spring 20012.
