It's probably because nobody cares about rock bass, same with bullheads, carp, suckers etc... Well I shouldn't say nobody but they aren't very popular.

Depends where you are , some lakes rock bass are an invasive species so there's no limit , when people say "sunfish" its really referred to all the sunfish species bluegill pumpkinseed etc just like when people say "bass" its really referring to large and smallmouth

I have a great little lake that has a fantastic population of the sunfish species; bluegills, red ear sunfish, the hybrids as well as crappie and rock bass. We choose to keep the sunfish over the crappies because they are an new discovery to the lake and we want to support reproduction. I love eating the darn things and this year we plan to set and record the Ontario record for both blue gill and pumpkin seed. I know for a fact we have caught bigger than the existing records already. This year we are going to make it count.

Don't post the lake.
Cam you post photos of your successful catches especially where different types of fish caught - blue/red etc.
For those of us who seldom see if ever these fish could be eye opener.
Blue gill compared to sun fish compared to hybrid . . .

Who goes and targets them anyways? They are no fun to catch. Kids like to catch them and adults hate taking the hook out of their small little mouths.
To me they are bait fish. As long as there is enough in the lake for the game fish to eat... I am not concern about the limit or if they even have a limit on them. Just like smelts. Bait fish that people dip net by the thousands.
A 6 ft. 3 weight fly rod with 4 weight, weight forward floating line, and a cork popper. You'd soon be singing a different tune. A liberal limit is a good thing with panfish. Too many leads to stunted growth. That's why you have ponds full of runts. Too many fish eating at the trough. I saw some in Florida that you would measure in pounds not inches. Took a train ride at a gator farm. When ever we got close to the swamp, they were peeking out from lily pads the size of your bath tub. A longer growing season aids them in reaching that size. Leave your ultra light at the door.
