absolutely need one, you can purchase them, or buy the materials to make your own. I prefer short leaders, 6"or so if Im using wire. I also found that using heavy braid allows the lure a little more action and its easy to tie em on the spot. 50lb PP works great, the pike may rough it up or put a nick in it but it has so many small strands it doesn't let go.

I prefer to make my own leaders out of fluorocarbon for pike, usually between 17 - 80 lbs.. I have lots of confidence in its strength and truly believe it produces more fish.. Havent had a pike break it yet, if I feel a nick in the line after a fish, I cut it out and retie.
