Commercialization of walleye stopped. Two Shoal Lake 40 First Nation residents have been convicted for unlawfully selling walleye from fish harvested from Shoal Lake.

Two members are not allowed to commercially harvest fish for 7 years including a fine of $4,000.

After a lengthy covert operation the courts heard between 2009-2010 undercover Conservation Officers bought walleye from these two persons from Shoal Lake which is closed to Commercial and Sport Fishing for walleye.

The walleye from Shoal Lake collapsed more than 30 years ago, owing it to unsustainable levels of commercial harvest. Prior to its collapse the fishery provided important commercial and recreational opportunities. Assessments indicate that the ongoing illegal harvest of walleye is a factor in the very slow recovery of the fishery.

If you know anyone commercializing fish or wildlife please report it to the Conservation Officers at 1-877-TIPS -MNR

Or you can report it anonymously to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS

Wow!!!

A conviction!!!

However, took 5 or so years to go through the courts? How is the lake today?
