Yes dog fish , they fight pretty good don't they. If caught one on simco as well , was going to feed it to the mother in law, but I didn't want to waste a fish on her lol I'm kidding.

Not bad in a chowder also

Thats a bowfin,Poidy you are mixing it up with a burbot ling.Bowfin live in the weeds,fight like hell,stink and taste like crap,PS,watch out for the iron jaw

Thanks RW.. didn't want to point that out. But "Dogfish" Are saltwater.. different species altogether. But they do kick up a good fight. Frightened the Heck out of me the first time I pulled one up, was in a bass tourney. was betting on landing the winner.. But was sadly horrified when a bowfin emerged.

Years ago ,I was fishing for largemouth with a hulla popper at dust.I caught 3 of them,a real stinker to say the least.They are prehistoric,they have lobed fins and an air sack so in a billion years or so will become an amphibian.The burbot on the other hand I catch icefishing.They also fight great,are great eating and is a freshwater cod relative

yes I caught many in the Holland River. They bleed a lot! My hands get covered in blood every time I try to un-hook them.

Bowfin are actually quite nice to eat. The problem is that they have proteolytic enzymes in the flesh that once the fish dies start to break it down and the flesh gets mushy. If you want to eat one, keep it alive, the kill it and filet right away. Either cook immediately or place filets in water with lemon juice, the acid will denature the enzymes.

A couple years ago I was down in Louisiana and I thought the guys I was visiting were crazy when they were talking about eating "Choupique" (cajun name for Bowfin). I was pleasantly surprised, the flesh is firm and light flavoured when prepared correctly.

PS Bowfin can breathe air from the surface so they are really easy to keep alive as long as they are wet!

Longshank - thanks for pointing out. My phone wasn't liking the (new to phone) word bowfin. I think it is now close to remembering - - bowfin is now stuck in the phone.
