You are renting a cottage and are lucky enough to catch some fish. What do you do with the guts? Is it OK to take them with you on your next outing and dump them in the lake (without container of course).

Perhaps depends on the lake?

For provincial parks - I remember the instructions that fish waste could be left on shore - away from camp.

If busy lake - no shore available - if lots of turtles perhaps could / should dump in lake - however not too deep - 10 or so feet of water . . .?

I do remember reading once that on some lakes shouldn't dump the waste when ice fishing - rotting savages oxygen and over winter no turtles to eat the waste . . .

If possible at cottage - discretely bury the waste? Or freeze it and take it home with you. Or freeze and when go to garage - the add to garbage . . .

Some people could be offended if too many fish parts in water they think is pristine and clean . . .

Myself - I try to bury whenever I can. Especially at home - great for the gardens.

Great question - looking forward to other responses.

Thanks

Most I know freeze the guts and then throw them in with their garbage on the next pick up date. If in doubt ask the people you are renting the cottage from.

I have done the freeze and take home thing. Of course, forgot all about them.
There is quite a bit of land at this place so probably burying is best bet. As far as asking owners.........they do not fish! Can you believe it?????

Burying fish remains appears to be a logical alternative but ... Labs, Springers, Goldens, Setters, Pointers, Black bears, etc. could undo your efforts and create some serious problems with neighbours who, understandably, would likely be less than pleased to discover their dogs were chowing down and rolling in boney refuse.

toss in fire pit and call it a day. A simple bonfire will take care of it.

Toss back in lake......if a shield lake go back to spot 24 hrs later and catch
some Ling

if burying, only a few drops of smelly in vicinity will attract all kinds of unwanted critters.

OK.........I think I've ditched the burying idea (that was not intended) and have been swung over to back in the lake. Certainly the easiest and there was a black bear seen last year in the area. Probably miles away now but possibly others.
Thanks to all .

Put it in the blender on the puree setting and make chip dip.
