April Chartrand and Don Smith have all the amenities of home out on Callander Bay.

They might as well. They only head into town to restock on the weekend.

Otherwise, the small building is their home as they try to get their share of the walleye, perch and ling available under the ice.

"The fishing is great," Chartrand says Sunday morning. She's enjoying a hot cup of coffee, still dressed in her pajamas after spending Friday and Saturday nights out on the ice.

Their ice shack is one of close to 100 on Callander Bay Sunday, and while others are still hauling their huts out, they've just put in their second weekend on the ice.

Unfavourable weather conditions so far this winter caused a lot of delays for those hoping to get their ice fishing huts out on area waterways. On the North Bay shoreline along Memorial Drive, there is only a handful of huts. There are more off Sunset Point, but the go-to place seems to be Callander Bay so far.

Smith and Chartrand figure they've got a good 10 inches or more below their ice hut, an improvement over last weekend when they pulled it out with their snowmobile.

"We were hydroplaning on the slush," Chartrand says.

Smith says a few people using trucks to pull their ice huts out got stuck in the slush, and one vehicle broke through the ice Saturday. Only the front tires went through, and the vehicle has since been pulled out.
