fishing report from sandybay cottages

A group of 8 fished at sandybay from the 16-19th of jan. The fishing was the best on the 16th and 17th. A high pressure moved in on wednesday and the fishing really slowed down that day and the next. Over the 4 days we caught 78 walleye, 40 perch, 1pike, 1 herring, 1 smallmouth bass and 4 ling. 19 walleye were released as 5 were in the slot and the remainder were too small The largest walleye was 24 1/2 inches long and the biggest ling came in at 11 1/2 pounds. Most fish were caught using splitshot hooked with a minnow on tipups. The bite was finicky and quite a few were missed. We ate our catch everyday so there was no problem of going over our quota. As we were cleaning the fish we found something quite strange; all the walleye were males, and of the perch all were female. We were disappointed with the number of perch that we caught, but the ones we did catch they were all over 9 inches. We were in 32-34 feet of water. As always jeff was very accomodating and looked after us very well [except for the one time he underestimated the amount of gas he had in his tank] All and all a good trip and a good time.

That's still a great trip.

Intersting info about the males as we had the same thing a couple of weeks ago.

Also a noticeable absence of perch.

I wonderif they are deeper as folks were saying the water has cleared more......but I couldn't tell that while we were ice fishing.

For last 5 yers perch would harass you all day long, but you would still catch a decent amount of good size ones for a meal.

I am also hearing of more ling being cought this year than before....with plenty of big ones as well.

That set up you use is very close to what we use as well and seems to produce better than anything else IMHO>

Always interesting to see how the annul changes occur in this water body.

First time I have run a Bomdardier on 24:1 Auger gas.

sounds good. were u in the huts in the group or the far away one?
the minnows through the lips or the back?
