I use a few different techniques, always have 2 rods going. Il usually have one rod on a balancer with a homemade pickerel rig (will post a pic later on if i remember). Its got 2 hooks like most rigs, usually rock a small minnow and a bigger sized minnow until i figure out which one they prefer that day. Pickerel rigs that you buy from your local tackle shop work too. The next rod is used for jigging, i usually start off with a slab grabber then move onto swedish pimples, small jigs & bugs. You just gotta see what works for you, i catchem on the slab grabbers all day, but buddy sitting next to me might not get any on his. Just try different things.
Sorry i just re-read your question lol i didnt realize you were looking for advice for october-november lol i automatically assumed ice fishing. My bad ....or the fact that you asked for without using minnows lol. Guess i need some glasses
