I think it is illegal because for a brief moment while filing some propane escapes just like at the filling station.
How full are you getting the bottles?
I'd be surprised if mine are 50% full, but the instructions say 80-85% full.
I guess I could weigh one ......
The green Coleman ones I tare for 13.6 oz, then weigh out to make sure i haven't overfilled. Usually get close to a full pound of propane in about 50 seconds to a minute of filling.
I was told the key is temperature differential to get it filled properly. I take the big tank indoors overnight to warm up, and stick the little ones in a snowbank or freezer. Seems to help.
Oh, I always do a soap test afterwards to make sure they aren't leaking... Have caught a few that way...

I guess some of you have not heard of the Sunrise propane explosion in 2008 I believe. Caused by improper transfer of propane truck to truck, by "professionals" I might add. Not just about leaks, static electricity, poor grounding etc. all plays a part. It's illegal for a good reason. Over regulation is better than reading an obituary. You could be playing with fire, literally. Just my opinion and hope it never happens to anyone.

i dont see a difference between refilling pound bottles vs hooking up your 20 pounder to a bbq, hook up turn on......if you hurt yourself you are just plain stupid
1 lb bottles are $6.90 including tax where i live,a 20 lb tank costs $16 to fill, thats 80 cents a lb bottle compared to almost 7 bucks
a lot of guys use smaller heaters such as mr buddy so its way more convenient to use 1 lb bottles
You are exactly right. If you connect your bbq while having a smoke in the other hand there is a good chance you will have a problem.
The only way a person would have a fire or explosion is if there is a source of ignition. Pretty much the same as having a cigarette while putting gas in your car. Use common sense and you won't have a problem.
At work we have forklifts with propane tanks on them. When the tanks run out we change them. Pretty simple. From time to time the weak wristed guys don't get the connection done up tight enough. You smell the propane leaking and go tighten the connection No drama. No Nancies running around saying it's unsafe.

I agree to a certain extent. No difference in most part but you left out that all those who handle propane has training and is aware of the dangers involved with handling propane.

I guess we'll all get propane training then or maybe we should make propane bbqs illegal. Always a chance someone will blow up their backyard.
using the propane and transferring it are 2 different situation. When using... you are releasing the pressure from the tank. When filling you are pressurizing a tank. The pressurizing part is the one that can cause death. Fire is normal as propane is meant to burn. At the end of the day it is all about competence in individuals. How much do you understand about gases and pressure and so forth? How many will do their research? I bet there are many people in your life that you can think of that you would not want to see attempt refilling 1 LB tanks from 20 LBS tanks. I am sure there are many co-workers you believe are extremely smart at most things but will end up blowing up it they attempt this without the right instructions or understanding of this.
Don't get me wrong.... I refilled some.... then I went and bought a 5 Lbs tank and could not be bothered again.

The other part not really being brought up here, but alluded to in F4d's last post is that the 5/10/20lb tanks are built to be refillable. The 1lb cannisters are not (one of the reasons a 1lb is SOOOOO much cheaper than a 5lb). The seal on a 1lb will degrade much faster than on a tank meant to refill, and this introduces danger both during the refill, and during transport/use after the fact. A bubble test will reduce the chance of issues during transport, but if one goes when you are refilling, it has the potential to get real nasty.
Personally I just wish 5lb tanks were easier to find as I would love to take one of those out each time instead of several 1lbers. I had one but made the mistake of lending it to my sister and she promptly lost it

Just bought one a couple months back. 4.9lbs, Canadian Tire had them on the shelf. Not cheap but a whole lot less problems.

Now this i agreed. saving of $4.95 at Lowes or CT per tank is not worth it. I emptied the 1 pound tank for bout 8 hours of fishing. I know the risk is minimal but the minimal is still a risk and it could result in explosion, fire, injuries or even death. Be safe....

That sounds about right to me. I used part of a tank 'all day' for me, which was probably 5-6 hrs. I'm curious to know why some guys seem to use several in 1 day.

For me a full 1-lb bottle on my Mr Heater little buddy lasts about 5 hours, and I usually fish on average about 10 hours on ice, so yes I'd "consume" close to 2 bottles (for 10 hours sans the time when the heater is occasionally off)
