And why the heck can't we just stock a few thousand in to get the recovery going!?

"Pressure from non-sports groups???"

How many folks from the pro-sport group attended to present your side?

What specific arguments did the "non-sport" folks play to promote closure?

What facts did MNR view / accept as the final, acceptable reasons for closure?

Did they indicate when this issue would be reviewed again down the road?

I neglected to say that politics always have their claws in the picture.

I assume that some positions within the MNR are elected by you, the people?? Others are appointed?? You go after the elected in hopes of placing "neutral" leaders in this arena who will research every angle per the wishes of the public.

Have you started an on-line petition?

A sad day in Ontario for us sportsmen, Scugog closed and declining numbers of all other fish and game. The MNRs solution is to lower bag limits or close seasons due to pressure from non-sports groups. Oh, another thing, why did polluted Hamilton harbor get 50,000 wallete fry this summer, it could have gone a long way to restoring walleye in the Kawarthas.

The mnr compared to other provincal and or state DNr agencies is a joke for fisheries. Decent for hunting but when it comes to fishing it's all about sustaining natural fisheries. Walleye on scugog have never had Great spawning areas and with crappie in the scene over the last 20 years things wer destined to go down hill. Now why they stock the hamilton harbour over Scugog is beyond me. Hence the clueless mnr. IMHO

I agree with many of you regarding the dwindling population of walleye. There are numerous reasons as to why the population has dropped. Scugog may not be the most ideal ecosystem for walleye but there are definately areas of the lake that walleye can live and flourish in. The lake most certainly is deep enough in areas. matter of fact the deepest spot I've marked is 23 feet south of ceserea launch. Ive caught walleye in 4 feet of water at Scugog. However I do think that the biggest issue is fishermen that are negligent of regulations or just don't care to follow them. I have called the MNR twice on people at Scugog for keeping walleye well into the 23" plus range. One was a man at ceseara launch that I confronted when I saw him unload a toad of a walleye and once on a girl that had admitted to keeping a 25" pick on instagram. I see people being the main reason as to the decline of the population, and seeing as how there is a lack of CO's available I believe it is up to us the fishermen (fisherwomen) to police and educate the negligent people.

The reason why they dumped 50,000 walleye in Hamilton was because we humans wiped them out by 1950 with pollution! There was a "NATURAL" self sustaining population long before anybody even considered "STOCKING" walleye in scugog. And now with all the environmental changes Hamilton harbour is a much cleaner area. That's why they started a stocking initiative in again 2012 and dumped 100,000 in. And since then they have flourished that's why they dumped an additional 50,000. The MNR is all for returning lakes to there natural habitats.

Put all the blame on the steel industry they are responsible for 90%
of all the pollution in the Hamilton harbor...

They can stock Hamilton harbor till the cows come home.

The end result will be fat cormorants and zero walleye.

Scugog will never be a lake,it is a man made reservoir. Always been overfished summer/winter. Had a farm there on the Island for over 30 years seen lots of over fishing very little put back. It was only a matter of time.

A few local ice fishers who target them may have a different opinion, but it's good that most think Walleye don't exist, keeps the crowd down

Yup absolutely!
Wayyy too many people feel entitled to keep whatever and however much they want. Hopefully with new generations taking up fishing more people start practicing catch and release.

Sad day indeed. More fish closures. Could have stocked it since it receives soo much fishing pressure. Instead they stock Hamilton and dont worry about crowds no body wants to eat fish full of heavy metals. thanks for using our licence money so wisely mnr,. Again great decisions by pencil pushers.

I hear you, but I can't fully agree with you.

Years ago it was exciting for a young child to be taken fishing. There were fishing, shooting and archery clubs in our schools. The rules of the game were respected. We took the time to teach our young. Most listened and respected the outdoors.

Today, if they don't have a huge fish in minutes, many simply stop fishing. I have met many people who don't even buy licenses to fish or hunt. My favorite, NOT, responses are no one owns these fish so I am going to keep everything I catch. Huh?

It all starts at home with a solid upbringing and teaching them all properly.

In fact while out with a young son, a fish and game boat came charging towards us. They slid into us and grabbed our boat. Not a smile, a good morning, nothing. They wanted to see my fishing license. No problem. They said they were watching me with their binoculars. They asked me for the measuring tape that is used for fish that must be a certain length. I did not have one. Words %^&^%$. Then you just catch the fish without measuring they asked??? Show me your fish.... I couldn't as it was a strictly catch and release day. Words %^&45. I was seeing this huffing and puffing from them sensing they just wanted to write me a ticket.

"How do you know that it is 12 inches and legal?" I showed them 2 lines in felt pen on the lid of my tackle box......13 inches. In fishing, my one foot is 13 inches. Why do I want to keep fish who grow very slowly?? 13 inches is my one foot. More words and attitude.

They darted off and I was left with a child who was stunned at how pushy and unfriendly these officers were to us. Talk about destroying a child's day out for fear of it happening again. Trying to get him out again was a huge issue.

Hopes for the new generation?? Why would they care any more? In my opinion few really get taught properly. All it takes is one adult to keep one more over the limit and now you have given that child a poor education. Monkey see, monkey do. You have other threats to contend with...... e l e c t r o n i c s . The kids are hooked.

Educating our young and the rest of us is a life long project. Once the fish are gone, "Do you remember when.........."

Very unfortunate experience for you & your little one. Hope he can learn from you as to what 'real fishing' really is. Sounds like you're a good role model.

It isn't just while fishing though, as you can see the 'impatience' over a broad spectrum activities these days. Try driving on the expressways. I feel sorry for new drivers.
Everyone is "rushing to get somewhere, yet waste time when they get there".

Where will all this end up, who knows.

Thankfully, at my age (high 60's) I won't be here for the end game.

A lot of people share you views! Everyone needs to Relax - go fishing.
